As I delve into the captivating tale of Madonna, a star not just in music but in motherhood too, I am left in awe of her extraordinary journey. Born to a family that nurtured her dreams, she has now become a beacon of inspiration for countless children around the world – including the four she adopted from Malawi in 2017.

Madonna is crazy for Rocco Ritchie’s art.

I, as a dedicated follower, gleefully shared a sneak peek into my recent escapades in the city of love, Paris. Among the many exciting experiences, I visited an art exhibition, a joint venture by me and Guy Ritchie’s 23-year-old son. In my recounting of this trip, I couldn’t help but slip into mom mode as we celebrated this special occasion together.

I’m off to Paris to attend my son Rocco’s exhibition titled ‘The Tourist’ and catch up with friends, as written by the ‘Hung Up’ singer on her October 29 post. It’s a wonderful remedy for sadness! @roccoritchie @maisonrhed.

In the collection of her photos, there was one showing her embracing Rocco, another where both were showcased together with her son’s artwork, and yet another capturing a cozy moment of them seated closely at the dinner table.

Besides posting pictures from her visit to the art gallery, she also uploaded photos featuring her friend and fashion designer Michèle Lamy, individual images taken within her luxurious hotel suite, as well as heartwarming shots of her spending quality time with a stylish feline companion.

Madonna’s comment hinting at sadness comes weeks after the death of her brother Christopher Ciccone on Oct. 4, and stepmother Joan Clare Ciccone in September.

In the collection of photos, Madonna’s other children – Lourdes (aged 28, her daughter with Carlos Leon), David (19-year-old son), and twins Stella and Estere (12 years old) – were noticeably absent.

She’s just spent some high-quality moments with all five of her children, such as attending Billie Eilish’s show at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 17th.

I enjoyed capturing the moment my daughters posed with Billie Eilish. It’s great to step out and share experiences like these!” or “My daughters had a fun time posing with Billie Eilish. It’s always refreshing to get out and seize such moments!

Besides that one instance, Madonna has also frequently given glimpses into moments with her family members. In fact, for her 66th birthday, all six of her kids were there to celebrate. In August, the singer of “4 Minutes” posted numerous photos from a luxurious party in Italy on the 17th, captioning them as “La Dolce Vita.

In September 1995, Madonna encountered Carlos Leon during a run in Central Park. Her admiration for the Cuban-American fitness trainer-turned-actor quickly blossomed into a deep affection.

As a devoted admirer, I found myself deeply engrossed in the production of “Evita” – a role that Madonna was determinedly pursuing – the very next year. Unfortunately, my joy was short-lived as I discovered I was expecting during this exciting time.

“This is not exactly how I envisioned starting a family,” she told Vanity Fair in April 1996.

However, she was discussing her demanding work schedule on set, rather than the matter of their unmarried status or societal norms regarding marriage in the past.

Madonna stated, ‘Some have implied that my actions were meant for sensational effect.’ She further added, ‘Such remarks can only come from men. It’s far too challenging to be pregnant and welcome a child into this world with such flippant or attention-seeking motives. There are also rumors suggesting I utilized the father merely as a service provider.’

Having been married to Sean Penn from 1985 to 1989, she expressed no interest in retying the knot.

In my perspective, I think many individuals might find solace in the knowledge that I’ve ventured into matrimony, even if it ended unsuccessfully. I firmly hold the view that society generally perceives divorce as less stigmatizing compared to the journey of single parenthood.

On October 14, 1996, she delivered her daughter Lourdes Leon into the world. A few months afterward, she was honored with a Golden Globe for her exceptional performance as Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category.

Madonna and Leon did break up in the fall of 1997, but they made co-parenting work.

In an interview with Vanity Fair back in 1998, Madonna expressed that Lola, whom she affectionately calls her daughter, has always been a constant presence in her life and they are friends. Furthermore, she shared her joy about their relationship, mentioning that it took some time for them to reach this beautiful stage.

Speaking about being a mom, Madonna expressed that she anticipated having a child would provide a profound healing experience since she didn’t have a mother herself. She felt strongly that her destiny was to raise a daughter and intuitively yearned for her presence. However, she admitted she wasn’t certain what the actual experience would entail.

Lourdes took some time off, thanks to her mother, during which she served as a flower girl for the 2003 MTV VMAs and provided backup vocals on the “Superstar” track from the 2012 album MDNA. However, she has also built her own career, performing under the name Lolahol as a model and singer.

Following her time at a performing arts school in New York where Timothée Chalamet was a fellow student, Lourdes funded her university education herself, beginning at the University of Michigan and eventually earning her degree from Purchase College in New York City.

She informed Debi Mazar during an interview in 2021 that her family never relied on handouts. “Growing up, I had a lot of privileges, that much is clear,” she said. “However, my mom wanted something different for us. She didn’t want us to follow the path of other children of famous individuals.

Speaking to The Cut in 2022, she stated, “I aim to experience a sense of earned entitlement rather than feeling like I’ve merely received things…It’s unfortunate that nepotism often leads to individuals being less than impressive, and my parents instilled in me the wisdom to be far more intelligent than that.

Madonna’s British era began in 1998 when she started dating filmmaker Guy Ritchie.

Previously in the same year, the singer expressed to VF her desire for another child, stating, “I would love it, but I want to be in a secure partnership. It’s nice to glance over at someone and discuss, ‘What might be our next step?’

On August 11, 2000, they joyfully welcomed their son, Rocco John Ritchie, into the world. This little boy was named after one of Madonna’s Italian uncles and Guy’s father.

Madonna reconsidered the notion of marriage a couple of months down the line, and on December 22nd, which followed the baptism of her son Rocco, she exchanged wedding vows with Guy in Scotland.

Following their divorce in 2008, Rocco, their son, was divided between Madonna and Guy for custody arrangements. Frequently, during Madonna’s tours, Rocco would accompany her on her travels.

In an interview on Good Morning America in 2013, Madonna mentioned that Rocco moved himself to be part of something (without specifying what exactly), observing that he had grown significantly in a year and, being just shy of 13 years old, was often found admiring girls’ behinds.

She added appreciatively, “He’s the showboat in the family.”

In 2012, Rocco made an appearance alongside Madonna on the show Ellen. During the interview, he praised Madonna as a caring and disciplined mother. He expressed that while she can be quite firm, it is done with a positive intention.

In the following years, Madonna and Guy adjusted their child custody agreement so that Rocco could spend more days in London with his dad, who also has three other kids with Jacqui Ainsley.

All grown up now, Rocco is a full-time artist and cofounder of the London gallery Maison Rhed.

2022 saw the Royal Drawing School graduate reflect that transitioning to London significantly impacted him. He described it as a pivotal time in his life, marking his transformation from adolescence to young adulthood. This change spurred him to hone his passion while simultaneously challenging him to step out of his comfort zone. Remarkably, he knew what he wanted to pursue at a tender age, and once he immersed himself in art school, it ignited his creative journey.

Prior to making a splash in the art world, Rocco had been painting for quite some time and exhibiting his work using the alias “Rhed” during these years.

He clarified that he isn’t ashamed or embarrassed about his identity, quite the contrary. He is incredibly proud of his parents and all they’ve accomplished, and the wisdom they imparted to him. However, he required time for personal growth and self-discovery, away from the intense scrutiny of public opinion, similar to how his parents did before him.

As a devoted follower, I had the pleasure of accompanying my beloved girlfriend, Olivia Monjardin, to the 2024 U.K. premiere of my father’s Netflix show, The Gentlemen, while I was immersed in my art studies at Central Saint Martins in London.

Back in October 2006, I, a fanatic devotee, was blessed with the privilege of expanding my family by adopting David Banda, born on September 26, 2005, from the very heart of Hope – the Home of Hope orphanage in Lilongwe, Malawi.

In an unexpected twist, my actions sparked quite a stir, with some commentators suggesting that I took a child away from their own family – a claim I vehemently refute.

During an interview with NBC News, Madonna stated: “When I became a mother, some people speculated that it was for publicity purposes. I anticipated such assumptions. What I didn’t foresee was being accused of kidnapping or breaking the law. I never expected to be portrayed in such a negative light.

While we navigated through our respective journeys, David was thriving in his. “He has a fiery temper,” he confided, “a knack for flirtation, and an uncanny ability to make us laugh until it hurts. Of course, everyone carries their own set of baggage and unique traits, and I eagerly anticipate the unexpected gifts he’ll share with the world and the person he’ll become.

In an interview with the BBC, David’s biological father, Yohane Banda, who tragically lost his wife during childbirth complications, expressed his joy over David’s adoption. He explained that since there is widespread poverty in their village, he was confident that David would receive excellent care in America.

On David, a gifted guitarist, turning 18 in 2023, Madonna penned a heartfelt message: “I find it hard to believe that nearly 18 years have passed since we first met at the Home of Hope Orphanage in Mchinji! Your name ‘Truth’ speaks volumes! It’s fitting for an artist like you! You are blossoming into an exceptional individual, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Initially, Madonna and Guy appeared as a couple during their adoption proceedings with David. However, they were no longer together by the time Madonna was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2008.

At one point, she shared with a German publication, our romantic expectations have changed. I’ve let go of the notion that he would be the perfect spouse. Similarly, he has stopped expecting me to be the ideal partner.

Undeterred by her initial adoption journey, Madonna went back to Malawi in the year 2009 to welcome home her child named Mercy James, who was born on January 22, 2006.

And she was put through her paces yet again.

In 2017, officials who disagreed with the adoption argued that Madonna wasn’t fit to raise a child due to her recent divorce, as reported by People. However, Madonna shared that she faced such sexist treatment when she had to take her case to Malawi’s Supreme Court before being allowed to adopt Mercy. She found this behavior utterly absurd.

However, Madonna ensured her kids didn’t lose touch with their native land by frequently returning with them and establishing the charity, Raising Malawi.

In 2024, as Mercy James turned 18, Madonna penned: “Gorgeous Graceful James,” celebrating the blossoming artist and gymnast. “You’ve grown into a woman ahead of time! Radiant African Monarch! You left us all in awe!

Following her encounter with them at the very orphanage that also housed David, pop star Madonna adopted twin girls named Estere and Stella (each name symbolizing a ‘star’) from the country of Malawi in February 2017.

Occasionally, she found herself lost in thought, wondering, ‘Why isn’t my house bustling with kids dancing?’ She said this to People magazine, as there are so many children who desperately need a home. She reflected, ‘What’s stopping me? I should just take action.’

On this occasion, she decided to involve her four eldest children in the process, seeking their opinions on the possibility of growing their family.

According to Madonna, Mercy and David were filled with enthusiasm, while for Lourdes and Rocco, it wasn’t envy but rather a period of readjustment. Eventually, everyone became supportive. Lola remarked, “Mom, if that’s what makes you happy, we should do it,” expressing her support for Madonna’s decision.

In the context of her relationship with her siblings, Lourdes stated in 2022 that her interactions mainly involved disagreements with her brothers.

Sometimes they act like pesky nuisances,” she said to Debi during the interview. “A teenager brother? Well, we all know siblings often argue. However, Mercy and I have never had any disagreements whatsoever. She has always supported me, and I’ve always strived to be a good big sister for her. It’s more challenging with the twins since I don’t reside at the house anymore.

Madonna has said she’s “blessed” that her children all have artistic passions.

As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it as follows: Lola, who was not just an exceptional ballet dancer and rhythmic gymnast, but also ventured into musical theater and contemporary dance, has since transformed into a remarkable singer-songwriter. When we hit the road for our tours, there’s nothing more fulfilling than realizing we’re all part of the same creative team, weaving magic together on stage.

Absolutely,” she continued, “Being their mother as well means we can irritate each other at times. We’re not just a family of artists, we’re a regular family too, and that includes the occasional friction.

It was logical for Madonna to involve all the children who were residing with her in her retrospective tour, The Celebration Tour.

David began playing guitar from his childhood years, as she clarified. Mercy picked up the piano at age 8 and has spent most of her life being classically trained in it. Later on, when I took in twin children, they also learned to play piano and dance. To add to this, Estere developed an interest in deejaying.

Stella was quite reserved, Madonna pointed out, but she truly shines when performing on stage. Moreover, this child is exceptionally talented in the arts, Madonna commented, expressing her hope that she will embark on a path similar to Rocco’s, who transformed from being a B-boy dancer, skater, and graffiti artist into an exceptional painter after finding his true potential.
