Smile 2

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters This Halloween

The second installment, titled “Smile 2”, follows in the footsteps of Parker Finn’s successful 2022 film. In this continuation, a chilling supernatural force—manifested as a contagious grin—is transmitted to Skye Riley (played by Naomi Scott), a global pop sensation. Facing a threatening audience before embarking on her world tour, Skye must confront the menacing public.

The sequel to “Smile,” titled “Smile 2,”, has been widely acclaimed as surpassing the original film significantly, earning recognition as one of the top horror movies of the year. Lead actress Naomi Scott (“Power Rangers,” “Disney’s Aladdin”) is generating discussions about potential award nominations, including Golden Globe and Oscar nods, for her captivating portrayal. Blending elements of psychological horror, supernatural terror, and gruesome gore, “Smile 2” successfully satisfies all expectations.

Terrifier 3

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters This Halloween

As a fervent fan, I can’t help but marvel at how Art the Clown has transformed from an intriguing indie-horror prospect to a towering icon gracing our screens for Halloween 2024. The third installment in Damien Leone’s thrilling trilogy, Terrifier 3, has undeniably become this year’s must-see horror movie challenge, with visuals so unsettling and gruesome that even the film crew found themselves shaken by them.

As a fellow movie enthusiast hunting for the ultimate chills this Halloween, let me guide you: Seek not elsewhere, for I’ve found what you crave – the most bone-chilling, heart-pounding horror flicks that will send shivers down your spine!

The Substance

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters This Halloween

The Substance is the dark horse breakout horror hit of the season, and it’s building bigger hype every day. Writer-producer-director Coralie Fargeat delivers one of the best and most biting satirical horror films in years — one with an insane body-horror bend. The story follows former movie star Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) who celebrates her 50th (and a severe injury) by taking a black market drug called “the Substance,” which creates a much younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley).

In that location, we’ll pause, since the authentic workings and expense associated with the substance are the real “frightening” aspects portrayed in Fargeat’s movie. Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are garnering significant acclaim for their roles, while Coralie Faregeat is being highly commended for her unique reinterpretation of Cronenberg-style storytelling, challenging Hollywood beauty norms akin to a modern “Freaky Friday” twist.

Heretic*

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters This Halloween

The upcoming movie from directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods is set to hit theaters a week following Halloween. However, if it’s possible for The Simpsons to release their Halloween specials a week or so after that, then why can’t this list as well?

The film “Heretic” delves into the ominous, warped tale of two Mormon missionaries (Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East), who unfortunately knock on the wrong door. This residence belongs to none other than “Mr. Reed” (Hugh Grant), a character with a sinister motive for inviting these young women into his home. His purpose is not only to shake their religious beliefs but also potentially endanger their lives.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

As a devoted cinephile, I must say that the timeless charm of “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” continues to captivate audiences in cinemas. For those who have been eagerly anticipating the Halloween season, this film provides an ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in its spooky yet delightful atmosphere!

In the second movie, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), along with her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) and stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara), head back to Winter River to lay Lydia’s father Charles to rest. Sadly, the town’s past spirits continue to linger, and not long after, Astrid is taken to the Spirit World. This leaves Lydia and Delia with no choice but to join forces with Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) to retrieve her.

Tim Burton’s film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, has proven to be another cult classic success for him. The movie held the number one spot at the box office for three straight weeks and is still playing in theaters over two months after its release, even outperforming Joker 2.

Speak No Evil

Best Horror Movies to See in Theaters This Halloween

If you prefer thrillers over straight-up horror, then Speak No Evil is the movie to watch this year. This remake of the Danish original film takes the most uncomfortable scenario for couples (being forced to spend time with another couple/family) and turns it into a nerve-wracking, tension-filled experience that escalates awkwardness — all before it transforms into an intense slasher or survival movie.

James McAvoy has delivered an exceptional, “can’t miss” acting performance since his role in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Split”, unequivocally demonstrating his extraordinary ability to portray a chilling antagonist.

Don’t forget to look up your local cinema schedule! It’s common these days for movies to be re-released, and seasonal re-releases are increasingly popular.

On Halloween 2024, we had the pleasure of revisiting “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” in cinemas, marking its 50th anniversary. Additionally, the much-loved animated film, “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” and the seasonal favorite, “Hocus Pocus,” were also screened.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that some recent favorites are gracing the big screen once again. For instance, the hilarious yet chilling horror-comedy film titled “Happy Death Day” and the intriguing cult-horror flick known as “The Black Phone.

Lastly, if you happened to have missed the sensational indie-horror phenomenon of 2024, titled Longlegs, there’s a chance to catch it once more as it returns to theaters for a special Halloween screening.
