As a lifelong Power Rangers fan who grew up watching the show and playing the original arcade game, I’m absolutely thrilled with the announcement of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind! The new trailer has me buzzing like a Pterodactyl Warrior and the release date of December 10th feels like it’s light years away.

Enthusiasts of Power Rangers were thrilled when Digital Eclipse unveiled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind, and now we have a fresh trailer along with the long-awaited launch date for this highly anticipated 90’s style arcade fighter. In the new video clips, Rita’s Rewind appears to be amazing, and it has been confirmed that the game will be available on consoles, Nintendo Switch, and Steam starting December 10th. From the beginning, players can select from the original five Rangers, and the Green Ranger is also included, but it seems like there’s more to the game than just fighting as suggested in the trailer and a new PlayStation Blog post.

Digital Eclipse indicates that around 70% of the game involves the traditional beat ’em up style of play, where players use melee attacks and combos to battle hordes of Putty Patrollers and minions commanded by Rita Repulsa. In contrast, the remaining 30% of the game introduces a change in pace, drawing inspiration from iconic SEGA games such as Space Harrier and Out Run.

These sequences not only intensify the pace and provide a comprehensive feel of being a Power Ranger, but they also introduce some unexpected twists for long-standing franchise enthusiasts. For instance, an initial sequence might involve traversing Angel Grove to discover the state of the timestream due to Rita’s antics. Here, you will face a familiar adversary like Goldar, but also come across enemies that seem out of place in Power Rangers lore as currently understood.

Gameplay Switch-Up

As Goldar confronts me, Rita’s staff slams onto the ground, causing Goldar to grow colossal. Fans of the show will recognize this as the moment when the Zords enter the fray. In the game, it’ll be no different – perspectives will change, and we’ll dive headfirst into super-scaler mode once I leap into my Dinozord. Blasting through obstacles and adversaries with my Zord’s powerful arsenal, I’ll chase after Goldar, drawing inspiration from games like Galaxy Force and After Burner.

Once you manage to catch up, the gameplay will shift for the third time, presenting a first-person perspective from your Megazord as you engage in combat with the colossal Goldar. In this round, every player gets an opportunity to weaken the boss and aid in the ultimate objective of vanquishing him. The gameplay seamlessly transitions among all three modes, offering a unique time-traveling adventure experience that’s unlike any other.

In a recent post, Dan Amrich, Content Editor at Digital Eclipse, shared that they aimed to create a game with Rita’s Rewind that would have been both suitable and desirable during the past era, leveraging today’s extensive understanding of arcade gaming.

At Digital Eclipse, one key idea behind our work is striving to create games similar to those you cherished from your gaming past, although perhaps your memories may have embellished them slightly. With Rita’s Rewind, we aim to develop a game that could have been, and in many ways should have been, but likely wouldn’t have due to the diverse elements it offers. Having observed arcade gaming for three decades, we intend to leverage this perspective to produce something superior to what you might recall.” – Amrich.

On December 10th, the video game “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind” will be available for play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, Steam, and Nintendo Switch platforms.
