As a fervent aficionado of horror cinema and its intricate narratives, I must admit that Parker Finn’s work on the “Smile” franchise has left me utterly captivated. The way he weaves supernatural elements with deeply human stories is truly commendable. Finn’s approach to storytelling in “Smile 2” is a testament to his skill, as he manages to maintain the horror genre’s thrill while delving into character development that resonates on an intimate level.
In 2022, Parker Finn’s “Smile 2” generated more buzz and positive reception compared to the original “Smile,” with a higher rating of 85% positive reviews versus the original’s 79%. This heightened attention is not only due to its box-office success but also critical acclaim. Moreover, the sequel hinted at a darker progression of the franchise’s demonic curse, leaving fans intrigued about future installments. Finn has expressed interest in continuing the series if he can develop character stories instead of focusing on cheap scares. Although a third film is yet to be officially announced, there are promising storytelling opportunities for the franchise that Finn sees. Currently, “Smile 2” is playing in cinemas.
“To put it simply, there are numerous intriguing paths a future ‘Smile’ could take. For my part, I have a soft spot for eerie occurrences and terrifying elements that the concept of ‘Smile’ and the Smiler encompasses. However, for me, ‘Smile’ serves as a means to tell intense and reflective character stories. So, if multiple individuals were to have it, I would ensure we maintain an intimate touch in storytelling. This is crucial to me. Yet, there are still some intriguing surprises that ‘Smile’ has left in store.” (Spoken to Collider)
In the first-person perspective, let me share my take on the original film: I was drawn into a chilling tale revolving around Dr. Rose Cutter (played by Sosie Bacon) who bore witness to a client taking their own life, but what viewers gradually uncovered was that this young woman had been overtaken by a haunting supernatural curse. Now, shifting gears to the sequel, Smile 2, the curse found its new host in pop sensation Skye Riley (portrayed by Naomi Scott). The trauma and remorse from her past amplified the curse, leading to terrifying manifestations of a greater scale.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Smile 2
In contrast to the initial movie, where the curse shifted among individuals, the climax of Smile 2 features Skye taking her own life dramatically on stage during a concert, potentially placing thousands in the audience under the curse’s influence. This act could expand the curse’s reach for a potential future installment.
At present, Finn is working on a fresh interpretation of the 1981 horror masterpiece “Possession.” Although there’s no set release date for this project, it seems plausible that he might focus on it before taking on a new “Smile” film. The performance of both movies could potentially lead to a different director handling “Smile 3,” or the creation of a new story within that universe that doesn’t necessarily follow on from “Smile 2.
Stay tuned for updates on the future of the Smile franchise. Smile 2 is in theaters now.
