As a dedicated follower and admirer of Martha Stewart, I must confess that her latest documentary, while undeniably captivating, left me with a peculiar sense of dissonance. Much like trying to pair a gourmet dish with an off-key wine selection, the final product felt somewhat out of harmony.
Martha Stewart’s new documentary has one major critic: Martha herself.
After the premiere of “Martha” on Netflix on October 30th, the media tycoon voiced her criticisms towards the movie’s director, R.J. Cutler, regarding various editing decisions that she found objectionable.
In a conversation with the New York Times, she expressed her displeasure about the final scenes depicting her as a solitary elderly woman stooped over in the garden. She had requested him to remove them, but he didn’t comply. She strongly dislikes those last scenes and can’t stand them.
The author of the cookbook likewise expressed disagreement about the project’s rating, arguing that it didn’t accurately represent her preferences.
Martha remembered telling R.J., “A crucial aspect of the movie is for you to incorporate rap music.” She went on to say, “Dr. Dre might compose it, or perhaps Snoop Dogg, or maybe even Fredwreck. I insisted, ‘I want that kind of music.’ Unfortunately, they ended up with a poor classical score instead, which has no connection to me.
The 83-year-old stated that the director employed minimal footage from her private collection, failing to acknowledge her two grandchildren at all. She also expressed concern that the documentary focused excessively on her 2004 trial for obstruction of justice, resulting in a nearly five-month sentence in federal prison.
Martha remarked, “In the grand scheme of my long life, it wasn’t a significant event. The brief imprisonment spanned under two years, and I must admit, it felt more like a break than anything else… frankly, the trial was quite tedious.
She went on to say, “Not only did R.J. fail to mention this, but the judge was actually dozing off at the bench. Every day, I recorded this in my diary.
Even though she was critical about some parts, Martha acknowledged to the media outlet that she enjoyed the initial half of the movie. Additionally, she mentioned that the positive responses she’s heard from female viewers have given her a great sense of satisfaction.
She disclosed that numerous young women have told her, “Watching it made them discover a strength within themselves they didn’t know existed.” This is what she appreciates most about the documentary, as it powerfully portrays a woman exhibiting immense courage in the face of adversity and triumph.
Though R.J. hasn’t yet made a public comment on Martha’s statements, he earlier expressed delight at the opportunity to document her life’s journey.
He shared with Tudum, “As I delved into Martha’s background, I found her to be a multifaceted individual, full of conflicts and paradoxes. The deeper I went, the clearer it became to me that there was much more to uncover about her life story. This discovery only fueled my enthusiasm.
The filmmaker also went on to celebrate the release of the film on social media.
He announced on Instagram on October 30th that ‘Martha’ is currently streaming on Netflix. He’s incredibly proud of this movie and extremely thankful to the outstanding crew responsible for its creation!
