As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast with over two decades of comic book reading under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed with the Mephisto revelation in Agatha All Along. The anticipation has been brewing since WandaVision, and we’ve all been eagerly waiting for the devilish character to make his grand entrance into the MCU. Alas, it seems that Death herself was the spookiest thing we got this time around – a far cry from the Mephisto train I’ve been patiently waiting at for years!
After concluding our journey on The Witches’ Trail with the finale of ‘Agatha All Along’, the last few episodes of this Marvel series brought several surprises regarding Billy, Agatha, and the road itself. However, it was the answer to a question that many fans had been eagerly waiting for that took center stage. To put it simply, the final episodes of ‘Agatha All Along’ finally shed light on whether Mephisto would make his appearance in the MCU, and the response might not be what you anticipate. [Here there be spoilers for the last episodes of Agatha All Along.]
Although Mephisto was mentioned earlier in the series, he failed to make an appearance yet again. Once more, Marvel’s devil remains elusive to us. Instead, what we get as a substitute for eerie or even slightly ominous elements in the finale – and indeed throughout Agatha All Along – is Death herself. It seems we are destined to keep waiting, just like passengers at a station, anticipating the arrival of the Mephisto train.
As we’ve reached this point, it seems like we’ve been traveling for a long time – if you want to call it the Mephisto ride. The suspicion that Mephisto played a role in the broader Westview story has lingered since WandaVision, with numerous theories suggesting that Mephisto was manipulating Wanda Maximoff’s actions within Westview as the main adversary. However, this idea was debunked when it was unveiled that Wanda had created the hex by herself, and her true enemy turned out to be none other than Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), who seems to have been motivated purely by her thirst for power with no apparent influence from anything else.

The idea that Mephisto could appear in the spinoff of WandaVision was discussed early on, but gained significant traction when a teaser for Agatha All Alone showed Billy Kaplan (Joe Locke) with a symbol over his mouth that seemed to prevent Agatha and others from hearing his true name. Many viewers believed this symbol, resembling an ‘M’, hinted at Mephisto’s presence, suggesting he might be concealing Billy’s identity. When Mephisto was mentioned in episode 3, fans became increasingly convinced we would encounter the character by the series finale, and even showrunner Jac Schaeffer fueled speculation by reminding us of Mephisto’s close connection to Agatha’s story in the comics, encouraging viewers to stay vigilant.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that sometimes, a show will present something humorous or seemingly trivial, but it often carries a deeper meaning too. For instance, Mephisto is deeply intertwined in Agatha’s storyline – now isn’t that intriguing? It’s like a game within the game, and we, as viewers, are always left guessing.
With the truth about Mephisto finally unveiled, we can now shift our focus towards what lies ahead. A possible third Doctor Strange movie appears to be the most plausible scenario for Mephisto’s appearance, although at present, all information regarding Doctor Strange 3 is merely speculation – even the possibility that Sam Raimi, who previously directed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and has connections to WandaVision, could return as director. It’s also conceivable that Mephisto might appear in other WandaVision spin-offs, like the Vision series, although this may be slightly less probable. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe evolves, the revelations from Agatha All Along hint at potential opportunities for Mephisto to play a role.
Agatha All Along is now streaming on Disney+.
