As a lifelong Marvel fan who’s seen more than a few episodes of WandaVision and Agatha All Along, I must say, Agatha Harkness has been my favorite character to watch unravel. The twist that Billy created the Witches’ Road was not only mind-blowing but also a testament to the power of belief and imagination.
Throughout the entire season of “Agatha All Along”, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and her coven have been journeying along The Witches’ Path, a legendary magical route said to grant any witch who completes its trials their deepest desire. This path is so renowned that songs like Lorna Wu’s “Ballad of The Witches’ Path” have been composed about it. Agatha, as the only known survivor of this path, has earned a certain level of legend herself. However, the final two episodes of the Disney+ series unveil an unexpected truth about The Witches’ Path that significantly alters our perspective on the entire series. [Warning: Spoilers for the finale of Agatha All Along lie ahead. Proceed with caution if you wish to remain unspoiled.]
It’s interesting to note that The Witches’ Road is considered legendary, but in truth, it was merely a myth – until Billy (Joe Locke) brought it into being with his magical abilities. This act of creation can be likened to a spell or curse, giving birth to something out of nothing. However, the shocking twist is that this myth wasn’t just a tale; it was a tool crafted by Agatha for centuries. She manipulated the belief in The Witches’ Road to trick other witches into giving her their powers. This is hinted at earlier in the season when Agatha formed this temporary coven and attempted to harness their powers. It turns out that Agatha couldn’t access the Road because it was never real; it was a deception from its very conception.
In Episode 4, Rio’s remark about acquiring the powers of other witches and their bodies takes on a deeper meaning when we consider that Rio is Death. Previously, we were aware of an association between Agatha and Rio, but now, with the revelation that Agatha has been deceiving witches for centuries to obtain their powers (and ultimately their lives), this sheds fresh light on their relationship, opening up a new perspective.

Absolutely, learning that The Witches’ Road wasn’t genuine adds a fresh perspective to other parts of the series we’ve watched. Since Agatha herself crafted the myth, she was aware from the beginning that what they were walking was likely a manifestation of Billy’s imagination, yet she merely played along. This implies that the subtle hints noticed by many viewers as the Road expanded episode by episode were indeed clues – specifically, those indicating the Road was heavily influenced by Billy, such as the depiction of fictional witches, the horror-themed trial, and so on. Moreover, it strongly suggests that Agatha knew early on about Billy being Wanda’s son, which hints at her intentions to claim Billy’s powers for herself, similar to her plans regarding Wanda in WandaVision.
What is particularly interesting What is particularly interesting about the revelation that Billy created the Road is that we also get the history of how the concept of the Road came to be. The finale takes viewers back into Agatha’s history where it’s revealed that when she gives birth to Nicholas, she’s told by Death that all she can give her is time — meaning that the boy is going to die. While it is not expressly stated that Agatha has an existing arrangement with Death to kill witches, we soon see Agatha going about the business of doing just that with her young son in tow, indeed even utilizing him in the scheme. As they walk along together, young Nicky starts singing a song that eventually becomes the Ballad, and in turn, becomes the legend of the Road that Agatha uses to lure in witches that she kills for their power.
The understanding between Billy and Agatha, that the Road only became tangible when Billy willed it into existence, suggests Billy’s growing grasp of his true abilities, as well as setting him on an unusual path. When Agatha sacrifices herself to save Billy from Death (although she later contends she didn’t give up her life for him, just being Agatha), she becomes a ghost unwilling to move on, avoiding confronting her son. This puts her in the role of guide for Billy, and together they form their own group embarking on an impossible quest: finding Tommy.
