As a seasoned cinema devotee with a penchant for British detective dramas, I must say that Ellis has certainly caught my eye (and ear). Having traveled extensively across the UK, it was intriguing to see the series unfold not only in various towns and villages but also in the lush landscapes of England. However, upon discovering that Ellis was actually filmed in Northern Ireland, I found myself pleasantly surprised.
Instead of being confined to a single location like the detective series Death in Paradise, Ellis spans various towns and villages within England.
In the fresh run of Channel 5’s show, Sharon D Clarke steps into the role of DCI Ellis, an adept detective known for solving complex mysteries. When needed, she brings her expertise to assist different investigation units.
DS Harper (Andrew Gower), who’s rediscovering his skills as a competent detective, assists her in her missions. He eagerly accepts Ellis’s guidance, hoping to solve some challenging cases and improve himself in the process.
In addition to gripping investigations featured in every episode, this series boasts breathtaking landscapes. However, you might be wondering where Ellis was filmed. Keep reading for the answer!
Where was Ellis filmed?
The Channel 5 drama, while it’s meant to depict scenes from and near the Peak District, was in fact shot in Northern Ireland.
The television show has been jointly created by Company Pictures, for both Channel 5 and Acorn TV, in cooperation with All3Media International (who will handle distribution internationally except within the UK) and Northern Ireland Screen.
Regarding particular places, it’s worth noting that the Moravian settlement of Gracehill, located in Ballymena, stood in as the fictional setting of Hanmore for episode 1.
Another location used for Ellis filming was Dromore, a small market town in County Down.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my awe when talking about some of the breathtaking locations featured in the episodes. For instance, in the third episode, we were shooting at the enchanting Shane’s Castle Estate in Antrim, and let me tell you, it was simply breathtaking.
To reach the river, we needed to traverse a small wooded area. This part was covered, providing welcome shade. After filming several takes there and then making our way to the camper van, the sun emerged from behind the clouds, revealing the stunning beauty of the surrounding landscapes.
She continued: “In the second episode, we filmed a sequence where one of our potential main characters was encountered in a field surrounded by a ring of trees and horses, with Clandeboye Estate as the backdrop. It was a miserable day, wet and muddy. However, when we shot the scene, as you approach this open space with only a circle of trees and the horses, it’s breathtakingly beautiful.
I thoroughly enjoyed shooting there. I adore cities that offer an urban landscape with surrounding hills, which is something we don’t often find in London. The scenery was breathtaking, even with the heavy rain, and it was truly beautiful. To make things even better, I had a fantastic crew and team who were incredibly welcoming.
Whenever the topic is cities paired with rain, Manchester consistently comes up. I never expected Belfast to be so drenched in endless sheets of rain, even a bit of snowfall surprised me. This wasn’t artificial snow; it was genuine winter precipitation without any need for snow machines. One morning we woke up to find that the city was blanketed in snow, making our filming all the more authentic.
In a similar vein, Andrew Gower stated: “We found multiple unanticipated seasons, all of which were wet.
Yet, it’s stunningly beautiful, lush with greenery, it’s almost like an endless sea of verdure. The people here are radiant with joy, always ready for laughter, kind-hearted, generous, they made us feel right at home. As outsiders, we were welcomed warmly amidst a group that has been working together for years, even starring in Game of Thrones and various other ventures. They extended their generosity and warmth towards us, making our stay here a source of immense joy.
Ellis will begin airing at 8pm on Thursday 31st October on Channel 5.
