As a lifelong gamer and cinema enthusiast who has been following Lara Croft’s adventures since the late ’90s, I must say that the casting for the upcoming Amazon series is a challenge that requires careful consideration. The character of Lara has evolved over time, from her original portrayal as a cool, confident archaeologist to the emotionally naive young woman we saw in Crystal Dynamics’ trilogy.
It was never going to be an easy task for Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag creator and executive producer of Amazon’s Tomb Raider series for Prime Video, to cast Lara Croft.
From the moment she was created in 1996, Lara Croft has created quite an impact in the video game industry. Her debut as a self-assured and knowledgeable archaeologist who wasn’t shy about using force when necessary resonated with many – especially men, a trend that was reinforced by the advertising for the game series which emphasized Lara’s physical attributes to a significant degree for a 3D polygonal character.
Nevertheless, even with this treatment, Lara Croft is widely regarded as a significant victory for female characters in video games. Consequently, Amazon and Waller-Bridge likely find themselves under considerable expectation to deliver an accurate portrayal.
The process for choosing Lara on Amazon’s Prime Video series appears to be just getting started. It is rumored that Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, and Lucy Boynton, famous for Bohemian Rhapsody, are both in line for an audition.
Turner and Boynton gained significant recognition for their roles as Sansa Stark and Mary Austin respectively, with Turner earning an Emmy nomination. However, the question remains if they can match the acting prowess demonstrated by Alicia Vikander in 2018 or Angelina Jolie in her Tomb Raider films of the 2000s when stepping into their respective roles.
Lara Croft’s character has consistently evolved over time, with her initial depiction emphasizing both intelligence and sex appeal, while the newer version in Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider series portrays her as rugged and less emotionally mature, exploring her identity more deeply.
In light of the Prime Video series adaption following the path established by Crystal Dynamics trilogy, and being developed simultaneously with Amazon’s own Tomb Raider game, it seems likely that the series will primarily feature a version of Lara Croft more contemporary to our current times.
A Lara who is discovering her true potential appears to be the right fit. Although some may yearn for the classic Lara Croft, characterized by her sleekness, sex appeal, maturity, and disregard for personal emotions in favor of action and combat – a Lara Croft reminiscent of a Marvel Cinematic Universe hero, more symbol than individual – I personally find myself drawn to a Lara Croft who seems authentic and human-like.
In my humble opinion, Crystal Dynamics has truly outdone themselves with their captivating trilogy of games. This brings me to a personal query that I find intriguing: who will embody the enigmatic Lara Croft in Amazon’s upcoming series?
Following its release, Netflix’s animated series featuring Hayley Atwell as Lara received generally favorable feedback, and a second season was announced just two weeks later. Upon viewing it myself, I found it entertaining, yet felt that it relied excessively on the same themes from the previous trilogy of games. In summary, an enjoyable adaptation, but one that could have taken more risks.
If Amazon intends to develop a new Lara Croft game based on the same trilogy, I believe both fans and Lara herself deserve an adventure that focuses less on her self-discovery and more on teamwork. The finale of the original game demonstrated that Lara can’t thrive in isolation, and that depending on others doesn’t equate to weakness. It would be refreshing if Amazon recognized this aspect without requiring her to repeat the same character development journey repeatedly.
Regardless if it’s by having others join her or demonstrating her self-confidence leading to something unexpected, it’s essential for every character, including Lara Croft, to have companionship. A Lara who understands and values this is the kind of character I want to see in future movies.
