Following the second installment of The Diplomat, what sets it apart might just be its dramatic, intricate, suspenseful finale twists.
The initial season concluded with an actual blast and a shocking disclosure; however, the current season is giving it a tough competition by ending with a pivotal moment that has left Kate and Hal’s future uncertain.
What was the ending like for the season, given all the significant surprises and plot twists throughout its duration, and could you describe how the climactic final scenes unfolded?
Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of The Diplomat season 2.
The Diplomat ending explained: Was Trowbridge actually behind the HMS Courageous bombing?
Contrary to the impression left by the conclusion of Season 1, it turned out that he had absolutely no part in the events that transpired. In Season 2 of The Diplomat, Keri Russell’s character, Kate, and David Gyasi’s character, Austin, investigated the matter further and discovered this to be true.
Although some thought him responsible for the bombings, Austin made an effort to oust Trowbridge, yet this endeavor didn’t succeed because Trowbridge’s reputation started thriving instead.
One person who was definitely involved was Meg Roylin, the Conservative Party operative and ally of Trowbridge. To confirm that she was telling the truth about Trowbridge’s innocence, Kate got the two of them in a room together, and got her to confess the truth to him.
She told him that she had seen Scotland was going to leave the union, but knew if she told Trowbridge he would have only pushed them further away.
In order to halt this, she assembled a group with the intention of devising a strategy to confront HMS Courageous. She engaged Roman Lenkov for this task, thereby presenting Trowbridge with a chance to demonstrate his leadership skills and draw Scotland closer once more.
There were not supposed to be any casualties, but the plan went awry and 43 people were killed.
Upon learning this, he responded with an unthinking fury, choking Roylin. His immediate, instinctive response suggested he was indeed unaware of the situation.
Who was behind the plan?

It turned out that the while plan may have involved a number of people, including Roylin and Conservative MP Merrit Grove, it was concocted by someone even higher up – Vice President Grace Penn.
She did this without President Rayburn becoming aware, and flew to London in order to ensure Trowbridge covered up what he had found out.
After Grace realized Kate was privy to her decision, she gently drew her aside for an explanation. She clarified that America’s security was at risk due to Russia’s advancement of nuclear weapons, and that all of Britain’s nuclear arsenal was stationed at Creagan, a Scottish base – the sole European location where U.S. submarines could dock their own nuclear vessels.
Grace explained that this location was the final spot where the U.S. could identify a Russian nuclear submarine before it was en route to New York. She suggested that if Scotland had gained independence, they would have shut down the base because of their deep-seated dislike for nuclear weapons and their reluctance to serve as a target in contemporary warfare scenarios.
Initially, Kate found herself convinced by Grace’s reasoning, thinking that the tough choice Grace made was essential. Yet, eventually, her thoughts shifted and she determined to aspire for the position of vice president instead.
What happened to Kate, Grace and President Rayburn?

Near the close of the season, Grace made up her mind to continue serving as vice president instead. This decision came about when she was presented with the role of a “nuclear czar” following Trowbridge’s successful persuasion of President Rayburn that she was suitable for the position.
Despite all the information at her disposal, Kate harbored doubts. Moreover, she aspired to secure the highest position, and to further her ambition, instructed Hal to contact the Secretary of State, notifying him about Grace’s role in the HMS Courageous bombing incident.
At the very end, Hal unexpectedly altered the strategy and opted to address President Rayburn personally. Shortly afterwards, he shared the details of their discussion in a rushed, anxious manner with Kate over the phone. This conversation took place immediately after Kate had disclosed her intentions to Grace, stating that she aimed to secure the position for herself.
Hal revealed that he disclosed all of the information to Rayburn, and that it made him upset – really upset. In fact, he was so upset that he died!
Upon receiving this news, Kate observed as Grace was encircled by Secret Service agents. It then dawned on her that with Rayburn’s demise, Grace Penn assumed the presidency of the United States of America, oh dear…
