Agatha All Along episode 9 ending explained: What happened to Tommy?

As a long-time Marvel fan and someone who has spent countless hours delving into the intricacies of the MCU, I must say that Agatha All Along has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The series finale was nothing if not shocking, and it left me on the edge of my seat, eagerly awaiting any news about a potential season 2.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Agatha All Along episode 9.

One of Marvel’s most cherished series in recent memory, Agatha All Along, has concluded with an astonishing plot twist.

Over time, we ultimately uncovered Joe Locke’s Teen’s true identity, gained additional insights into Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio, and lastly, learned the fate of Agatha’s child, Nicholas Scratch.

In episode 8, there were startling disclosures, such as the demise of Agatha, who chose to perish rather than surrender Billy to Rio. However, it was not the last we saw of Agatha; she made an appearance as a spirit in episode 9.

In episode 9, the surprises kept on coming, and the last sentence of the series hinted at more exciting journeys ahead.

Of course!

What happened to Nicholas Scratch?

In the start of episode 9, we witness the events leading up to Nicholas Scratch, Agatha’s son, being abducted by Rio, also known as Death (portrayed by Aubrey Plaza). This incident and its impact on Agatha are vividly depicted.

Episode 9 resumes by going back to the time when Agatha was expecting a baby. To her dismay, Death makes an appearance, and Agatha pleads with her not to claim her unborn child.

Death indicates she can grant just time, yet when Agatha inquires about the amount, she vanishes. Astounded, Agatha exclaims that she didn’t utter any magic words or chants – instead, the baby was created without any pre-existing formula or recipe.

In the course of events, she accidentally discovers a group of witches who extend an invitation for her to become part of their circle. However, upon revealing the name of her child – Nicholas – the story takes a dark turn as Agatha is seen slaughtering the witches. Subsequently, mother and son manage to escape from the wreckage that ensues.

In the depicted sequences, we see Nicholas maturing alongside Agatha as they hunt down and eliminate additional witches. When inquired about her motive for targeting witches, Agatha explains that it’s simply a means of survival.

Agatha explains to Nicholas that there are restrictions on her abilities. She clarifies that she’s unable to mend his wounds or shield him against the impending danger, and also mentions that she doesn’t have the gift of foretelling when Death might reappear.

In due course, Nicholas’ mother arrives while he and Agatha were soundly asleep. After greeting his mother with a kiss, he left with her. Upon waking up, Agatha found their son missing and burst into tears, lamenting that she wished for more time together.

Why does Agatha kill witches?

Agatha kills witches to absorb their power.

While deeply grieving for her son, Agatha was approached by a witch, who overheard her melodious tune about the Witch’s Pathway.

In a devious manner, Agatha pretends to comply, offering to accompany her, adding that they need to assemble a group of witches. However, Agatha teasingly mocks the coven, questioning their abilities by asking why they can’t manifest the gateway to the Witches’ Path and expressing doubts about their magical prowess.

In response to the witches’ assault on Agatha, she harnesses their power and subsequently annihilates them, repeatedly perpetrating a ruse that results in the elimination of additional witches and the absorption of their powers.

However, surprisingly, the gate materializes – and none other than Billy (portrayed by Joe Locke, previously unveiled as the offspring of Elizabeth Olsen’s character, Wanda) steps through.

In a rush, he queries if it’s the Witch’s Path and swiftly passes through the entrance, with the rest of his group in tow. Yet, this action signifies just one possibility – that Billy personally constructed the Witches’ Pathway.

Why did Billy create the Witches’ Road?

Billy was extremely eager to locate his brother Tommy, which led him unintentionally to call forth the Witches’ Path on his own.

As Billy acknowledges that he crafted the Witches’ Path with his Chaos Magic and odds and ends from his old bedroom, Agatha appears as a spirit to torment him. Rather than asserting that she died for him, she clarifies that she made a well-considered gamble.

Agatha clarifies that the Road was merely an illusion until Billy brought it into existence – and he comes to understand this revelation means he unwittingly caused the deaths of Alice, Lilia, Mrs Davis, among others. However, Agatha insists he also saved a life, as evidenced by Jennifer Kale appearing from beneath the ground in Westview and soaring aloft.

After coming back to the gate, Billy initiates a charm to drive away Agatha; however, she persists in lingering around him. In a moment of desperation, Billy queries why she refuses to perish, and she confesses it’s due to her reluctance to confront her son. She reveals that Billy frequently evokes memories of Nicholas within her.

At the conclusion of the story, Billy secures the gate to the Witches’ Path, effectively transforming it into a resting place for the deceased. Intriguingly, Agatha proposes that they could work well together, and hints at their imminent quest to locate Billy’s brother, Tommy.

What happened to Tommy?

It’s uncertain where Tommy currently is, but the ending of the season certainly suggests that he’s still alive.

In the eighth installment, it was disclosed that Tommy’s path to a second life wasn’t as straightforward as Billy’s. However, should Billy manage to find his brother’s missing spirit, he could potentially grant a second life to Tommy.

Agatha helps him to locate a boy who’s drowning and sends Tommy’s soul into the boy.

It seems as though this must have worked, with Agatha and Billy now on the hunt for Tommy.

Although it’s uncertain at this point whether Agatha All Along will have a follow-up season, and there’s no additional content after the credits, we confidently anticipate that this narrative could continue within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), possibly within a Young Avengers project.
