As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for dark, gritty tales and a soft spot for anime adaptations, I can confidently say that the 1997 Berserk TV series is a must-have addition to any collector’s shelf. This masterpiece, which first captivated me back in the day, has stood the test of time and remains unmatched in its portrayal of the tormented Black Swordsman, Guts.

25 years ago in 1997, an anime adaptation of the Berserk TV series tried to portray the grim story of the Black Swordsman named Guts. Despite being just 25 episodes long, it’s widely considered one of the best adaptations to date. A fan-made remake called “Berserk: The Black Swordsman” aimed to surpass this, but unfortunately had to stop production following a legal threat. On a positive note, the original series is now available on Blu-ray discs, and Crunchyroll offers a special Steelbook edition for collectors.

At the Crunchyroll Store, you’ll discover the unique 1997 Berserk TV series with its exclusive Steelbook cover. This particular version retails at $59.96, but remember, using the code WELCOME15 could potentially get you a discount. On the other hand, if you prefer the standard Blu-ray edition, it’s available on Amazon for $49.99 and also on Crunchyroll for $44.96. Do take note that once the Steelbook edition is sold out, it won’t be restocked.

Apart from stunning cover artwork, both editions offer a collection of 25 high-definition episodes, featuring the original Japanese audio with English subtitles and the popular English dub. Additionally, you can delve deeper into the story by reading the manga, now continued by Kouji Mori and Studio Gaga artists, using Kentaro Miura’s notes as a roadmap. For more info on Miura’s dark masterpiece, you can read its official synopsis below:

“His name is Guts, the Black Swordsman, a feared warrior spoken of only in whispers. Bearer of a gigantic sword, an iron hand, and the scars of countless battles and tortures, his flesh is also indelibly marked with The Brand, an unholy symbol that draws the forces of darkness to him and dooms him as their sacrifice. But Guts won’t take his fate lying down; he’ll cut a crimson swath of carnage through the ranks of the damned – and anyone else foolish enough to oppose him! Accompanied by Puck the Elf, more an annoyance than a companion, Guts relentlessly follows a dark, bloodstained path that leads only to death…or vengeance.”
