As a cinephile with a penchant for dystopian narratives and a soft spot for the Hunger Games franchise, the revelation that Rachel Zegler will not reprise her role as Lucy Gray Baird in the upcoming prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, has left me both intrigued and perplexed.
Rachel Zegler announced on Tuesday that she won’t be featured in the upcoming Hunger Games film. During a chat with Jack Antonoff for Cosmopolitan, they discussed Suzanne Collins’ Sunrise on the Reaping towards the end of their conversation. Zegler mentioned: “I’d love to return as Lucy Gray Baird, but I’m not involved.
Last year, I stepped into the shoes of the heroic Lucy Gray Baird in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel Suzanne Collins published in 2020 that Lionsgate swiftly turned into a movie production. Interestingly, they’re accelerating their pace this time – Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel “Sunrise on the Reaping” hasn’t even hit the shelves yet, but filming for the adaptation started as early as June. The book is set to release on March 18, 2025, with the movie following closely on November 20, 2026.
If Zegler is truthful about her participation in this second prequel, it could come as a massive surprise for fans. The finale of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” left Lucy’s fate undecided – both on the screen and in print. Should she not reappear in the subsequent book or movie, some fans might feel unsatisfied. Conversely, it could be beneficial for the entire franchise if Lucy did not survive to become a significant folk hero. It would seem unusual if we didn’t learn about her in the Hunger Games trilogy if she had continued living and becoming a prominent figure. Collins may be reducing Lucy’s role in history to avoid any inconsistencies.
Titled “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes“, this story unfolds 64 years prior to “The Hunger Games“. The protagonist here is a young Coriolanus Snow, portrayed by Tom Blyth in the film adaptation. Throughout the narrative, we witness Snow grappling with moral quandaries as he gradually succumbs to the corrupting influences of his dystopian environment. Readers are privy to the fact that this character will ultimately rise to the presidency, and their knowledge of the story’s eventual outcome in Suzanne Collins’ original trilogy adds an intriguing layer to the tale.
40 years after the events of “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” we’ll find ourselves witnessing the sunrise on the 50th Hunger Games, a special event known as the Quarter Quell. In this edition, twice as many tributes will be chosen from their districts. Back in District 12, the veteran tribute Haymitch Abernathy is trying to keep his hopes in check. His primary concern is simply surviving each day and being with the one he loves. However, when Haymitch’s name is announced, it feels as if all his dreams are shattering into pieces.
On March 18, 2025, “Sunrise at the Harvest” is set to be released by Scholastic, and the movie version will debut on November 20, 2026. Currently, you can see Rachel Zegler performing in a Broadway production of “Romeo & Juliet.” Subsequently, she’ll make her next appearance on screen in the U.S. release of the Netflix original animated film, “Enchanted,” scheduled for November 22, 2024.
