Agatha All Along Finale Explained: Agatha’s Ghost

As a seasoned scholar of the Marvel Universe, I find myself deeply moved by the extraordinary journey of Agatha Harkness. Her life, filled with resurrections, mentorship, and sacrifice, is as captivating as a witch’s cauldron brewing over an open flame.

[Caution: The following discussion reveals key events of Agatha All Along episodes 8 and 9.] In a dramatic twist, the climactic episodes of Agatha All Along saw the demise of the centuries-old witch, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn). Her powers, taken by the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) in the finale of WandaVision, were returned to her via the Witches’ Road. The son of Wanda Maximoff, Billy (Joe Locke), transformed into Wiccan, helped Agatha retrieve her powers. This was crucial for their joint mission to thwart Rio/Death (Aubrey Plaza), who sought to claim Billy, having stolen a second life and causing disruption by inhabiting the body of William Kaplan.

Accompanied by their inner compass, Billy and Agatha embarked on a journey to locate Billy’s twin brother Tommy, now known as Coven Two. Despite Agatha All Along concluding with Agatha appearing spectral, it is established in the comics that Agatha has died and resurrected.

In the comic book Fantastic Four #186 from 1977, Agatha’s grown-up son Nicholas Scratch, a warlock, brought their grandmother back to New Salem, Colorado – a hidden community of witches that Agatha had abandoned in the 17th century to live among humans. This group, known as the Salem Seven, were a supernatural team consisting of Vertigo, Brutacus, Gazelle, Hydron, Reptilla, Thornn, and Vakume, who sought to punish Agatha for supposedly exposing New Salem’s presence to the mortal world. However, the Fantastic Four managed to rescue Agatha, leading to Nicholas Scratch being banished to the Dark Realm by the witches and sorcerers of New Salem. In 1979’s Fantastic Four Annual #14, Agatha deprived the Salem Seven of their powers and sent them back to New Salem once more.

The Ghost of Agatha Harkness

In a chilling event, the ghostly presence of Agatha Harkness made its debut from beyond the grave, offering aid as Wanda tapped into her magical abilities to vanquish the Seven. Following Wanda’s use of her Hex powers to conceive, Agatha’s spirit resurfaced in issue #4 of The Vision and the Scarlet Witch, forewarning Wanda about a looming danger set to arrive on Halloween – a time when the boundary between our world and the spirit realm is at its thinnest.

The Resurrection of Agatha Harkness

Following the events depicted in “Vision Quest”, where Vision, Wanda’s synthezoid husband, had his memories erased upon being reassembled as the emotionless, all-white Vision, Agatha Harkness made a physical appearance in issue #50 of “Avengers West Coast” in 1989. She assisted in governing Vision and Wanda’s twin sons, Tommy and Billy Maximoff, who were born in “The Vision and the Scarlet Witch” #12 from 1986.

Eventually, Wanda was jolted back to memory of her kids, leading to a devastating mental collapse in the year 2004’s Avengers #500. In Avengers #503, it was unveiled that Wanda had slain Agatha due to her actions erasing Wanda’s children. When Wanda’s former teammates challenged her over the illusion she created to resurrect Billy and Tommy, she lashed out at the Avengers. To make her see reality, Doctor Strange employed the Eye of Agamotto to reveal the truth to her.

Following Wanda, the amnesiac character, making amends for her past misdeeds and reconnecting with Billy and Tommy, who had been reborn as the Young Avengers’ Wiccan and Speed respectively in ‘Avengers: Children’s Crusade’, Agatha’s spirit came back to serve as Wanda’s mentor spiritually in the first issue of ‘Scarlet Witch’ released in 2015.

The Trial of Agatha Harkness

When Wanda found out that her craft as a witch had become corrupted, the Scarlet Witch and her spectral guide embarked on the path known as the Witches’ Realm, an expanse accessible only to those with magical abilities. Here, they encountered the spirit of Wanda’s biological mother, Natalya Maximoff, who was once the Scarlet Witch herself.

Later on, Natalya disclosed that Chaos — a cosmic force whose essence fuels her chaos magic and is the origin of the oldest form of witchcraft — was responsible for Witchcraft’s malady.

In the comic book series, Scarlet Witch (Wanda), along with Maiden (Wanda) and Crone (Agatha), performed a healing ritual for the witch deity. Natalya made the ultimate sacrifice, giving her soul to preserve magic, and subsequently brought Agatha back to life in a younger form in issue #14.
