As a gamer with a deep-rooted love for comic books and superhero movies, I can hardly contain my excitement for James Gunn‘s take on Superman in the DCU. Having grown up reading about Rex Mason, also known as Metamorpho, I’m thrilled to see him making his live-action debut. And knowing that they’re going the practical effects route? View Urgent ForecastThere’s no denying the excitement surrounding James Gunn’s initial DCU undertaking, his upcoming Superman film. Previous portrayals of the legendary hero have ventured into unexplored territories, but Gunn intends to bring things back to the source material – comic books. This adds an extra burden on him to effectively shape the future of DC’s superhero series. As a result, it’s anticipated that Jonathan Kent (played by Pruitt Taylor Vince), Clark’s adoptive father, will play a significant role in this movie. Interestingly, Metamorpho, a fan-favorite character, is set to make a comeback before his live-action premiere, with Anthony Carrigan stepping into the role.
Ever since the announcement, I’ve been curious about how Gunn and the team would bring their vision to life. Some fans thought they might go all-in with CGI, but Gunn has given us a sneak peek that suggests otherwise. In response to a question on Instagram about how Rex Mason would be brought to life, Gunn revealed they’re opting for practical effects instead.
Due to Rex undergoing mutations that granted him elastic and transformative powers, he possesses a variety of talents which he employs for benevolent purposes. Since he was broken down into fundamental chemical components, his body parts consist of solids, liquids, and gases, enabling him to merge them to generate intricate compounds or mold them on command. First introduced in The Brave and the Bold #57 in January 1965, Rex was conceived by the late Ramona Fradon, Charles Paris, and Bob Haney.

According to DC Studios, the story of Superman follows Superman’s quest to harmonize his Kryptonian roots with his upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas. He personifies truth, justice, and a brighter future, standing firm in a world that views kindness as outdated, yet grounded by human compassion.
Confirmed Superman DCU Film Characters
So far, more than a dozen characters have been confirmed for the movie, and among them are the ones you’ve already mentioned. Moreover, Neva Howell has been cast as Martha, who serves as Clark’s adoptive mother and plays a crucial role in shaping his moral values in every version of Superman on screen.
A number of staff members from The Daily Planet newsroom are set to get involved too. Mikaela Hoover takes on the role of the well-known Cat Grant, while Beck Bennett portrays Steve Lombard – a sports journalist at The Daily Planet. Christopher McDonald appears as Ron Troupe. Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor, working alongside his assistant Eve Teschmacher, who is played by supermodel/actress Sara Sampaio in this production.
Superman is currently slated to open in theaters July 11th, 2025.
