As a seasoned Mage and detective in the bustling city of Minrathous, Neve Gallus is a force to be reckoned with. Her powers have earned her the title of the most effective private investigator in town, but it’s her fierce opposition to slavery and her unwavering fight against injustices that truly sets her apart.
In the game Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you can assemble a team of seven unique companions. This team includes two Rogues, two Warriors, and three Mages. Each companion possesses distinct abilities and attack styles. At Windows Central, we’ve carefully assessed each character, comparing them based on their effectiveness in battle and compatibility with other companions. In essence, we’re providing rankings to help you determine the best choices for your team composition.
When selecting companions for your journey, it’s crucial not only to focus on their individual skills but also to consider how they complement your team dynamics. This means choosing those who can bring out the best in your character. Following a review of our Dragon Age: The Veilguard companion tier list, proceed to the subsequent sections for detailed insights into each character and optimal pairings.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard companion tier list
Plan your party around Primers and Detonators
It’s easy enough to rank the companions on their own merit. However, an equally, if not more important factor, is how well your party works together. You can have two companions in your party at a time. So, you really want to consider how well they work with your character in regards to Primers and Detonators.
In Dragon Age, a Primer is a skill that can make opponents suffer extra conditions such as being Sundered, Overwhelmed, Weakened, etc. On the other hand, Detonators intensify these conditions on already affected enemies. The more you use Primers and Detonators, the quicker your enemies will be defeated.
For each character, there is a unique set of skill progressions. A quick glance reveals whether an ability triggers or amplifies, plus the type of impact it delivers. Keep in mind that you can interchange any companion’s skills at your leisure, excluding active combat situations.
For a comprehensive understanding of each of the seven companions, you’ll find detailed information about them in the subsequent sections. These companions have been arranged conveniently in alphabetical order for your perusal.
Bellara Lutare
Bellara exhibits a charming geekiness and an artistic flair, with a particular fascination for relics from the ancient elven era.
It’s not surprising that, as a Mage and member of the Veil Jumpers, she frequently employs her abilities to engage with the Fade. In battle, she harnesses her magical skills to weaken adversaries and empower allies. This woman is often associated with electricity.
I initially thought Bellara would rank higher on our tier list due to her diverse abilities, but when compared against the others, she earns a B rank. She is a Mage who owns a gauntlet that can transition into a bow, so she offers ranged magic and arrow attacks. She’s also a bit of a support character, but not nearly as effective as Lace or Emmerich.
An optimal combination would be either Davrin or Lucanis with Bellara. While Bellara isn’t the strongest support character, it’s advisable to pair her with a robust warrior such as Davrin or a versatile fighter like Lucanis to maintain a well-rounded team composition when Bellara is present in your party.
Abilities: Fade Bolts, Enfeebling Shot, Replenish, Time Slow, Galvanized Tear
Davrin
Much like numerous Grey Wardens, Davrin exhibits an impressive blend of physical strength and personal resilience, not only in combat but also in character.
Typically for his kind, this Warrior exhibits unwavering devotion and carries both a formidable sword and a striking shield adorned with a grand griffin symbol, hinting at his avian comrade in combat.
This Warrior’s formidable attack strategy earns him a top-tier position in our Elite rank. Much like numerous tank-oriented characters, Darvin possesses an ability to draw enemies towards himself (aggro) and sustain reasonable damage levels. Additionally, he boasts impressive stunning capabilities that aid in managing crowds and shielding support characters. What sets Davrin apart from other companions is the presence of a young griffon named Assan who fights by his side on the battlefield; together, they can be an extremely potent duo.
Emmerich Volkarin
Emmerich is a scholarly Mage who loves to learn more about the Fade.
Though he excels in the craft of summoning the deceased through necromancy, it’s important to note that his aim is not to exploit this power but rather to safeguard humanity against the mystical realms of the occult.
In our rankings, Emmerich isn’t the top choice, but he certainly deserves an ‘A’ grade. In combat, this Mage employs his necromantic abilities to conjure the deceased. These spirits either attack or hinder his adversaries under his control. Moreover, he excels at healing allies in battle.
Abilities: Final Rites, Replenish, Entangling Spirits, The Bell Tolls, Time Slow
Lace Harding
Lace first appeared as a scout in Dragon Age: Inquisition and soon became a fan-favorite NPC.
I’m glad to note that within The Veilguard, she has been fully integrated as a companion, making her one of a select few Dwarf female characters with romantic potential in this series. In the role of a Rogue, Lace demonstrates remarkable skill, employing a bow and arrow to launch precise attacks from a distance against our foes.
Lace earns a lauded S Rank on our tier list. The reason we ranked Lace so high is that she offers fantastic support, especially as a healer. You’ll be able to keep fighting without having to think as much about your health bar with her replenishing your hit points regularly. What’s more, she’s also good at slowing down enemies with debuffs from afar, so her crowd control skills are also very useful.
Best Companion pairing: Lucanis or Darvin — they’ll be able to hit harder and longer with Lace providing support for the three of you. A levelled up Taash can also be good for distracting enemies away from Lace, but you’ll need to put the time in for Taash to be a good choice.
Abilities: Seismic Shot, Heavy Draw, Shred, Adrenaline Rush, Soothing Potion
Lucanis Dellamorte
Lucanis is a tortured soul fighting a battle with his own personal demon.
Given that Lucanis belongs to the Antivan Crows – an association known for its members being assassins, spies, and thieves – it’s hardly unexpected that he excels as an assassin.
In our rankings, Lucanis secures an elite ‘S’ rating owing to his versatile set of abilities. Wielding a pair of dual daggers, this proficient Rogue is capable of inflicting necrotic damage on enemies. Yet, he demonstrates care for his comrades, providing healing and buffs to his team members. What sets Lucanis apart from others in the list is his immediate potency; you won’t need to invest extensive time in developing his skill set to make him a formidable ally right from the start.
Ideal Duo Combinations: Lace or Davrin – The long-range attacks and knack for healing from Lace synergize exceptionally with Lucanis’ swift lethal tactics. On the other hand, if you prioritize self-healing, Davrin’s formidable Warrior melee strikes can empower Lucanis in battle.
Abilities: Eviscerate, Abominate, Soothing Potion, Debilitate, Adrenaline Rush
Neve Gallus
In the city of Minrathous, Nev Gallus – a skilled mage – harnessed her magical abilities to excel as an exceptionally efficient private investigator.
In the ranks of The Shadow Dragons, she passionately stands against the scourge of slavery and tirelessly works to combat oppressive acts perpetrated by unscrupulous rulers in Tevinter. While she acknowledges her own magical abilities, she is not convinced that Mages are inherently superior to others.
I personally really like the idea of Neve, but as a battle companion, she earns a B rank. During combat, she specializes in ice spells that can slow enemies down for better crowd control. She can also deal a decent amount of damage if you level her up properly.
Optimal Team Combo: Darvin, Lucanis, or Lace – Choosing a suitable partner for Neve might require some thought. While she excels in applying debuffs, a robust Warrior or Rogue can help maintain team efficiency by offsetting her effects. However, if you’re playing as a powerful Warrior, the supportive healing of Lace could significantly boost your performance.
Abilities: Icebreaker, Blizzard, Glacial Pace, Time Slow, Replenish
Taash
Tassh is a Warrior and the only companion you can have who is a Qunari.
Standing tall and sporting impressive horns, Tassh is undeniably the most imposing member among them. She’s a seasoned hunter of dragons, which isn’t unexpected considering she belongs to The Lords of Fortune, a daring band of explorers.
In our rankings, Taash was given a C grade due to her lack of immediate usefulness. She truly shines in the late-game once upgraded, but other characters perform better from the start. In combat, Taash’s attack style mirrors her robust personality – direct and powerful. She equips dual-axes for melee attacks and can even breathe fire against enemies. Notably, she excels at drawing enemy attention to herself, shielding you and your other companion from their attacks.
Abilities: Fire Breath, Dragon’s Roar, Dragonfire Strike, Spitfire, Fortune’s Favor
Choose the right companions for each mission
In Dragon Age: Veilguard companions, each character brings unique strengths to combat and offers distinct skills. To get the most out of this game’s adventure, it’s crucial to choose the allies whose play styles complement yours for an efficient gaming experience.
When choosing your two companions to accompany you, think about which ones work well together and offer the greatest benefits. Keep in mind that for maximum effect from Primer and Detonator statuses, it’s ideal to have abilities that complement or enhance each other between you and your teammates.
If forgetting or not wanting to worry about self-healing is something you struggle with, then Lace Harding makes an excellent healing support companion for you.
