As someone who has spent countless hours watching and laughing at Peanut‘s antics, I feel deeply saddened by this turn of events. Mark Longo’s bond with Peanut, spanning over seven years, is not just a friendship but a testament to their unique connection that has also brought joy to many of us.
A viral squirrel named Peanut is in a bit of a pickle.
On October 30th, the popular figure who boasts over 536,000 Instagram followers and more than 424,000 Facebook fans was taken into custody by New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), as confirmed by his owner, Mark Longo, on social media.
In a heartfelt post on Instagram, I shared that unexpectedly, officials from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) visited my home and took Peanut away from me. Sadly, he was then put down.
Longo went on to say, “Peanut has been my closest companion for the past 7 years. He’s been the heart of my life and a significant part of many others’, too. It’s hard for me to grasp this change, emotionally.
Over the years, I’ve become a beloved figure online, thanks to my hilarious videos showcasing all sorts of antics. From demonstrating tiny fashion trends and flaunting my trick-performing skills, to indulging in scrumptious waffles and engaging in other peculiar activities, it seems there’s no end to the fun I can have!
A representative for the DEC communicated to the Associated Press that they initiated an investigation after receiving numerous public complaints about questionable wildlife accommodations, which might harbor rabies, and unlawful pet ownership of wild animals.
However, the DEC did not confirm whether Peanut had been euthanized.
According to reports, officials took custody of a raccoon named Fred. Longo, from the P’Nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary, mentioned that Fred had sustained injuries and would eventually be released back into the wild once he’s been treated and rehabilitated.
He shared with AP over the phone that it’s been a dreadful ordeal for him,” he said, “yet we must continue caring for our 300 animals.
Longo, who launched a GoFundMe campaign to finance his legal battle for Peanut’s return, acknowledged that it’s illegal in New York state to own a wild animal without proper documentation. However, he clarified that he was actively working on the necessary paperwork to classify Peanut as an “educational animal.
