What you need to know

  • Square Enix’s Naoki Yoshida has confirmed reports that more Square Enix games will release day and date on Xbox and PC.
  • The publisher has previously had exclusivity agreements with PlayStation for some franchises, including Final Fantasy, that have not been as profitable due to sales numbers not compensating for the game’s growing operating costs.
  • Earlier this year, Square Enix announced plans to shift its marketing strategy to eschew exclusivity agreements and instead embrace a more widespread release schedule across multiple platforms, including Xbox and PC.

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the intricate worlds of Square Enix games, I must admit that I am overjoyed at the news of more titles gracing both Xbox and PC platforms simultaneously with their PlayStation counterparts. Having grown up on the classics like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, it’s always been a tad frustrating to see my favorite series locked away behind exclusivity agreements.

I’m thrilled to share that we, at Square Enix, are expanding our games’ availability! Starting now, more of our titles will be simultaneously released on Xbox and PC alongside their PlayStation counterparts. This exciting news was shared by none other than Yoshi-P, our director and executive officer, in a recent interview with 4gamer.net. So, fellow tech enthusiasts, get ready to enjoy Square Enix games on more platforms!

Earlier this year, Square Enix disclosed their strategy to release more of their games on Xbox and PC platforms. This move was prompted by financial reports showing that the Japanese company’s games were not covering operational and development costs, despite rising sales figures. The strategy primarily focuses on major franchises, AAA titles, and lesser-known intellectual properties from their catalog. It also signifies the termination of time-limited exclusivity deals for games in the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest series.

The game titled FANTASIAN Neo Dimension is one of Square Enix’s initial releases to debut across all platforms following their strategic shift announcement. Set to drop on December 5 for Xbox, Steam (PC), PlayStation, and Nintendo, FANTASIAN Neo Dimension offers an enhanced version of a timeless JRPG adventure that predates the Final Fantasy series.

Let’s brainstorm strategies for encouraging a large number of people to engage with it, while ensuring its financial sustainability.

Yoshi-P expressed his apologies to Mistwalkers, the creators of FANTASIAN, for the additional effort needed to distribute the game across multiple platforms. He acknowledged that releasing the game on numerous platforms has generated enthusiasm among players. “We appreciate their hard work,” he added. Yoshida was instrumental in advocating for a multiplatform launch of FANTASIAN, stating to 4gamer.net that it’s crucial to ensure as many people as possible can play the game and that it remains profitable from a business standpoint.

As per Yoshida’s statements, the team examined FANTASIAN’s Metacritic score and the attention it garnered upon its 2021 launch on Apple Arcade. They also assessed the regions where the original version of FANTASIAN was played to decide the most suitable platforms for the release of the definitive edition.
