As a seasoned Monster Hunter veteran, spanning across generations of consoles and countless hours spent slaying beasts both great and small, I can confidently say that the upcoming release of Monster Hunter Wilds has me more excited than ever before! The gameplay details we’ve seen so far – from the upgraded Wyvern’s Fire attack on the Gunlance to the ability to fire Slinger Ammo while keeping my weapon out – it’s clear that Capcom has taken our feedback and crafted an experience that is truly next-level.
Lately, I’ve been fortunate enough to participate in the Open Beta Test of one of my most eagerly awaited games of 2025, Monster Hunter Wilds. After spending a few days deeply immersed in it, I must admit that I can’t get enough. The intricate details of the initial open-world setting are captivating, the designs for the new monsters and equipment are exquisitely detailed, and the gameplay – from exploration to combat – is enjoyable and brimming with possibilities.
During my participation in the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta Test, I found at least fifteen thrilling gameplay elements that have ignited my eagerness to play the complete game upon its release on February 28, 2025. Several of these features were hinted at through official materials released by Capcom, while others remained secret until adventurous players like myself uncovered them during the Open Beta Test.
These are the sixteen gameplay aspects I’m most excited to delve deeper into as I continue my journey in Monster Hunter World.
Keep in mind that what you’re witnessing is an Open Beta Test for a game that’s still under construction – Monster Hunter Wilds. This implies that many elements demonstrated during this test and those discovered within the beta could undergo significant modifications before the full game release, when it officially debuts.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details – Focus Strikes aren’t just for wounds
In Monster Hunter Wilds, each weapon category now has a novel move called Focus Strike. You can activate this move by holding down the left trigger on your controller or assigning it to any key on your keyboard and using it as Focus Mode. These strikes are intended to inflict additional damage on a monster’s exposed weak spots and potentially knock them over.
Instead, it’s important to note that Focus Strikes serve a purpose beyond merely hitting wounded areas. These strikes can also be employed against temporary vulnerabilities that show up on particular monster body parts following specific attack sequences.
After Rey Dau unleashes its final lightning blast, its horns might separate momentarily, providing an opportunity for a Focus Strike. If you manage to strike that specific weak point, the creature will become heavily disoriented and susceptible to additional attacks for several seconds.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Focus Mode can be used in the middle of attacks
In Focus Mode, you can hone your attacks to strike vulnerable areas or particular body sections of a monster more precisely. Interestingly, you can also activate Focus Mode amid combos and during attack sequences to adjust the trajectory of your strikes mid-motion, ensuring you don’t miss your mark.
You can even use Focus Mode while in the air with the Insect Glaive to target hard-to-reach wounds with the Focus Strike attack.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — You can adjust how you activate Focus Mode
If the standard controls are causing trouble when activating Focus Mode, you have the option to customize it within the settings menu. Instead of keeping it as a hold function with the left trigger, you can switch to a toggle method. Moreover, you can tailor the activation methods for both melee and ranged weapons separately in Focus Mode, enabling you to set them according to your preferred playstyle.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Mantles from Monster Hunter World have resurfaced
In Monster Hunter World, mantles return, like the Ghille Mantle, offering temporary beneficial effects when worn by players. Unlike before, you no longer need to sheathe your weapon to take them off once they’ve run out; instead, they automatically recharge while being worn and become ready for use again after their ability has been exhausted.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Environmental traps have returned
In Monster Hunter Wilds, Environmental Hazards from Monster Hunter World are back, and they appear to be even more prevalent this time around. For instance, the Windward Plains area is filled with various environmental hazards that can be utilized strategically against the monsters.
As an avid enthusiast, I’ve come across some fascinating natural obstacles that can be quite useful in a pinch. For instance, there are vine-like trees capable of momentarily ensnaring monstrous creatures. Then, there are unsteady rock formations that, when triggered, can cause a minor landslide, inflicting substantial damage on anything within its path.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Setting up Pop-up Camps
In the expansive, open-world-style settings of Monster Hunter Wilds, there are specific areas where you can establish Temporary Camps. These camps serve multiple purposes, including replenishing your supplies, altering your equipment, and marking spots for fast travel. This way, when monsters escape, you can swiftly pursue them with ease.
In each locale, there are a limited number of spaces available for setting up Pop-Up Camps (for instance, Windward Plains has just four spots). These camps can be damaged by monsters if placed in areas where they often wander, so it’s crucial to think strategically about their placement to avoid them getting destroyed.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Turf Wars are back with a vengeance
In Monster Hunter Wilds, the rivalry between monsters from Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise continues, leading to intense, cinematic confrontations known as Turf Wars. During these conflicts, neither monster emerges unscathed. Players can capitalize on this situation by enticing specific monsters into combat, then attacking them while they’re engaged in their Turf War, dealing extra damage to both opponents during the skirmish.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, conflicts among turf inhabitants have undergone significant changes compared to past games. For instance, you can now instigate smaller monsters to attack larger ones, or witness situations where certain monsters eliminate a group of large creatures, allowing the Alpha pack leader you’re pursuing to remain undisturbed for your hunt, free from interference by its peers.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Mounting the Seikret can save you during combat
Whistling for the Secret creature grants temporary invulnerability during mounting, allowing you to bypass incoming attacks or escape from a dangerous monster. This gives you an opportunity to heal yourself or sharpen your weapon safely. Furthermore, you can summon the Secret creature at most moments, including when you’re downed, and perform this action with your weapon drawn.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Powerful Bowgun ammo can be used while riding Seikret
Typically, when on the Seikret, your attacking abilities significantly decrease since you’re restricted to a feeble mount attack and a jumping dismount attack. Conversely, Light Bowguns and Heavy Bowguns avoid this predicament as they can still utilize an array of ammunition types without any reduction in their damage potential.
In essence, the Seikret offers a unique advantage: it lets you move around while reloading specific ammo types that typically demand you to stay put, such as Sticky Ammo or Slicing Ammo. This way, you can safely reload powerful ammo types without exposing yourself to attacks. However, don’t forget that you’ll need to dismount in order to utilize special ammunition types like the Heavy Bowgun’s Ignition Mode or Light Bowgun’s Rapid Fire Mode.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details – Bowguns now have infinite ammo for certain ammo types
Now, both Light Bowguns and Heavy Bowguns come equipped with an endless stock of Normal, Pierce, and Spread ammunition, eliminating the need to spend time or save inventory space on crafting materials for these types of ammo.
On the other hand, you’ll still have to create and store advanced ammunition types such as Sticky Ammo, elemental ammo, and Slicing ammo in your inventory pack before using them.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Bowguns get new ammo modes to play with
The Heavy Bowgun’s Wyvernheart mechanic from Monster Hunter World (now renamed into Wyvernheart Ignition Mode) has received a significant buff to its recharge timer so you can now use it more often to blast monsters away with a hail of bullets. In addition, you can help recharge Ignition Mode faster by shooting enemies with any ammo type.
Meanwhile, the Light Bowgun introduces a new firing method akin to the Heavy Bowgun’s Ignition Mode, except instead of continuous fire like a Gatling gun, you discharge ammo in rapid succession, more like a submachine gun. The Rapid Fire mode shares a recharge timer similar to Ignition Mode, and by increasing speed, it allows for quicker shooting at enemies.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Offset Attacks
The weapon types Great Sword, Heavy Bowgun, Switch Axe (in Axe Mode), Hunting Horn, and Hammer have a fresh special attack called the Offset Attack. Essentially, these counter moves send enemies soaring in impressive staggers, giving you the opportunity to deal additional damage while they’re temporarily knocked out.
On rare occasions, a unique stagger animation will appear on a monster, preventing you from activating it again immediately. While you can employ Offset Attacks to fend off incoming assaults, keep in mind that you’ll still sustain damage during the counterattack, though the damage will be substantially reduced. Therefore, exercise caution when deploying this strategy if your health is low.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Perfect Block & Power Clashes
These weapons, including Charge Blade in Sword & Shield mode, Heavy Bowgun, Lance, Great Sword, and Sword & Shield, now feature an improved defense mechanism called Perfect Block. This mechanism allows for a significant reduction in the impact of a monster’s attack if timed perfectly.
If you manage to execute enough Perfect Blocks, you’ll trigger a unique feature called Power Clash involving a creature known as a Monster. In these Power Clashes, you’ll engage in combat with the monster and must rapidly press the attack button to overwhelm it and momentarily stun it for several seconds. This stunned state gives you an opportunity to launch another attack while the monster is still reeling.
Remember, fights won’t happen frequently, but they do occur sporadically, and you can’t initiate them while blocking enemy ranged assaults. Moreover, certain monsters in the complete game might have attacks that are unavoidable through blocking, necessitating you to dodge instead to survive.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — You can store song notes while using Hunting Horn’s new Echo Bubble attack
In Monster Hunter Worlds, the Hunting Horn now has a fresh attack called Echo Bubble. This attack creates a zone-affecting puddle on the ground that enhances the stats of any player standing on it and harms enemies who do the same, whenever the Hunting Horn user initiates a tune.
What you may not know is that you can place a maximum of three Echo Bubbles at a time to cover more space and deal extra damage monsters while you perform songs. Additionally, you can input song notes while placing Echo Bubbles so you can store songs to buff your team and have a full recital attack ready to go without sacrificing your offensive momentum.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — Gunlance Wyvern’s Fire has been upgraded
In Monster Hunter Wilds, one weapon I particularly enjoy, the Gunlance, has undergone significant changes. Now it offers fresh combinations for combat, and an exciting new feature: the ability to fire the powerful Wyvern’s Fire attack twice consecutively due to its added charge capacity.
Furthermore, hitting enemies with shelling attacks during the Gunlance’s Wyvern’s Fire cooldown will decrease the timer, allowing for more frequent usage to destroy them. Plus, executing the Full Wyrmstake Blast combo’s final Wyvern’s Fire will cause it to fire faster compared to using it independently.
Monster Hunter Wilds gameplay details — You can fire Slinger Ammo while your weapon is out
In Monster Hunter Rise, a gameplay aspect that’s been carried over from earlier games is the Slinger Ammo, which was first introduced in Monster Hunter World. With this feature, you can launch small projectiles that can inflict various effects on monsters such as blinding them using Flash Pods, causing significant damage, or activating environmental traps from a safe distance.
In this game, you can use Slinger Ammo even when you’re not armed or have your weapon sheathed. But here’s something interesting that the game doesn’t explicitly mention – the way you fire Slinger Ammo with your weapon drawn is different from how it was in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.
In Monster Hunter Wilds, instead of holding the left trigger followed by pressing the right trigger to fire Slinger Ammo with your weapon out, you now simply hold the left trigger and then push the left analog stick on your controller for the same result. This change was made to accommodate the new Focus Mode controls and Focus Strike attacks, as they required more control space.
Using this approach, you can launch Slinger Ammo to weaken monsters, maintaining your attack momentum without needing to switch weapons.
This is only the beginning of a long and wild adventure
To be frank, I could chat endlessly about this game, praising its exceptional character customization, captivating environment design, and daring gameplay that seeks to merge features from past titles to craft the definitive monster-slaying adventure.
If a glimpse of Monster Hunter Wilds at its outset is so captivating, I can barely fathom the grandeur that lies ahead as we uncover additional landscapes, equipment, and beasts in the game.
Regardless of the choice, I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of the next thrilling installment of Capcom’s esteemed Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Wilds, which is scheduled to invade consoles and PC platforms in the year 2025.
In the year 2025, on February 28th, Monster Hunter Wilds – the upgraded version of one of Capcom’s top-tier Xbox and PC games, Monster Hunter World – is slated for release. This exciting new installment will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers through Steam.
