As a cinephile with a keen interest in true crime narratives, I have to say that Until I Kill You is a gripping drama that sheds light on the chilling story of John Sweeney, a man whose actions left an indelible mark on the lives of several women. The series serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating consequences of coercive behavior, gaslighting, and domestic abuse, and how they can go unchecked for far too long.
Wondering about the whereabouts of the real-life John Sweeney, the character portrayed by Shaun Evans in “Until I Kill You”? Here’s where he stands today.
In the latest ITV series, we trace the story of Anna Maxwell Martin as Delia Balmer, a former girlfriend of Sweeney, who is determined to bring justice after experiencing brutal assaults at the hands of Sweeney.
After being released on bond, another assault occurred, and the offender managed to elude authorities for six years while using various fake names to avoid detection.
In relation to the show and his character, Evans explained: “The narrative unfolds across approximately 15 to 20 years, chronicling a woman’s life – Delia Balmer. It essentially delves into how this woman found herself ensnared in manipulative behavior, gaslighting, domestic abuse, and violence within one of her relationships.
In the end, she found disappointment within the legal system, but when it came time for them to rely on her crucial role in their case against him, that’s where the main point of the story lies.
But what happened to John Sweeney and where is he now? Read on to find out.
Where is John Sweeney now?
At present, John Sweeney is incarcerated, facing several life imprisonment terms, due to his attempted murder of Delia Balmer and the murders he committed against Melissa Halstead and Paula Fields.
In the year 2001, Sweeney was ultimately apprehended due to his brutal assault on Balmer, which took place in 1994. It was only when Balmer’s life was threatened by Sweeney’s frenzied attacks with an axe and a knife that a neighbor intervened, leading Sweeney to flee the scene.
For a period of six years, Sweeney assumed various false identities and managed to elude the police. However, he was ultimately apprehended when connections were traced between him and Paula Fields, whose decapitated body was discovered in London’s Regent’s Canal back in 2001.
Despite there being no proof connecting him to Fields during that period, he faced charges for attempting to kill Balmer. Following his testimony in court, Sweeney was convicted and subsequently served four life prison terms.
During his incarceration following the assault on Balmer, which occurred at Gartree Prison in Leicestershire, Sweeney was additionally interrogated about Fields and an ex-girlfriend of his, Melissa Halstead, whose remains were discovered in a canal in Rotterdam back in 1990.
In February 2010, the murders of Fields and Halstead were connected, leading to the arrest of Sweeney for both crimes. Upon his apprehension, unsettling artworks were discovered in Sweeney’s cell at Gartree Prison. The police also found an additional 300 pieces of artwork, poetry, and weapons at his residence in North London.
In 2011, he received a life imprisonment for the murders, with Judge Mr Justice Saunders remarking: “These crimes were truly heinous. Due to the removal of their heads, it’s hard to determine exactly how the victims were murdered. The mutilation of the bodies significantly worsens the atrocity of these murders.
He continued, “It not only exposes the heartless character of the perpetrator, but also intensifies the sorrow of the families by understanding that pieces of their beloved’s remains are still missing.
I’m uncertain about the reasons behind the incidents of violence, but I am confident that this defendant exhibits a dominating nature in his relationships with females. Moreover, it’s chilling to observe that this control apparently stretches as far as determining whether they should continue living or not.
In the case of Sweeney, he decided to remain inside his Belmarsh prison during sentencing and was subsequently given an additional 10-year term for manipulating the legal process.
During the court proceedings, Sweeney consistently asserted his innocence regarding the murder charges. However, it was revealed to the jurors that when Sweeney faced rejection from women, he would become aggressive. This behavior was substantiated through the gruesome artwork that Sweeney himself created.
As per Balmer’s account, Sweeney admitted to murdering Halstead. She claimed that Sweeney killed her because he returned home to their apartment in Amsterdam to find her with two other men. According to reports, Sweeney told Balmer that he had shot all three and disposed of their bodies in the canal; however, no other bodies were found.
During Sweeney’s sentencing, the Metropolitan Police were actively searching for three other women believed to have connections with Sweeney, who were also suspected to have been his former romantic partners.
Detective Chief Inspector Howard Groves, who was in charge of the case, stated previously: “As he considers his time in prison, I want him to know that our investigation will carry on. We are working diligently to identify and track down other possible victims residing in the UK, Netherlands, and various parts of Europe, who might have experienced a similar ordeal as Melissa and Paula.
