As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the news about the next Gears game being a prequel instead of a sequel to Gears 5 has left me slightly bewildered. Don’t get me wrong; I appreciate the creative freedom this decision offers and the potential for fresh storylines. However, as someone who has seen the series evolve over the years, I can’t help but wonder what could have been if Rod Fergusson’s vision for Gears 6 had come to fruition. The idea of exploring new planets and galaxies within the Gears universe is tantalizingly intriguing.
In contrast to what many might expect, the upcoming “Gears” title, titled “Gears of War: E-Day,” is not a direct sequel to “Gears 5.” Instead, it’s a prequel that takes place before the first “Gears of War.” Interestingly, if events had unfolded differently, the next “Gears” game would have taken a different shape, as shared by former franchise leader Rod Fergusson.
During IGN’s Unlocked podcast, Fergusson (previously Diablo boss at Blizzard Entertainment following his departure from The Coalition in 2020) shared that while he was overseeing the series at the studio, an initial plan for Gears 6 was to shift the setting from Sera to a new planet instead of continuing the series on Sera.
According to the speaker (as reported by GamesRadar), “Gears 6” would depart from Sera. This was a direction they were aiming for. If you followed the story in “Gears 5”, you might have noticed hints of the UIR’s [Union of Independent Republics] rocket technology. They were setting up this idea that by taking over UIR territory, we’d adopted their space program. The plan for “Gears 6” was to transport players to a new location, to explore what this might mean for the galaxy or at least the solar system. This wouldn’t involve jumping between planets, but rather… it wasn’t going to turn “Gears 6” into “Mass Effect”. Instead, the focus was on introducing a fresh setting to see what this space technology looks like in practice.
Indeed, since the upcoming Gears game is planned as a prequel, it’s uncertain if this is the direction The Coalition will continue with the series in their next main installment. However, it seems we’ll need to be patient for some time to get an answer.
The game titled “Gears of War: E-Day” is currently being worked on for both Xbox Series X/S and personal computers. As of now, there’s no confirmed release date, but speculations suggest it might come out in the year 2025.
