As a long-time cinema enthusiast who has seen more than a few tragic antiheroes grace our screens, I must admit that The Penguin’s transformation from a somewhat sympathetic character to an undeniably chilling figure has been nothing short of captivating.
*Warning: Major spoilers for the The Penguin episode 7 ahead.*
Initially, Oz Cobb (played by Colin Farrell) in The Penguin appears to be rather endearing or relatable, albeit strangely so – however, if his likable persona hasn’t already started to falter, it undoubtedly will do so by episode 7.
In the second-to-last episode of The Batman spin-off, there were scenes that flashed back to Oz’s past life, revealing the fate of his brothers in a haunting sequence.
One flashback shows Oz playing hide and seek with his brothers in the tunnels underneath Gotham as the rain comes pouring in. Oz struggles to climb down a ladder to reach his brothers and, enraged, he pushes shut a heavy metal door, locking them into the overflow tunnel beneath the city.
On his solitary journey home, torrential rain flooded the streets of Gotham, eventually washing into a tunnel where it submerged two young boys.
Upon returning home, he deceives his mother by claiming that his siblings are out at the cinema. Meanwhile, trapped within the tunnel, his brothers cry out for aid before becoming quiet, leaving Oz to grapple with the reality of having taken their lives.
That pivotal choice he makes as a child serves as both the foundation and the starting point for his journey through life. The motivation behind this decision, such as seeking the exclusive affection of his mother’s love, plays a crucial role in shaping his experiences.
He commented: “I grasped it and was utterly shocked by it. I believe he completely denies any involvement, and has managed to convince himself that it didn’t occur as it did. It’s that serious. Yet, it lingers – the shadow. And it existed at that stage of his life – that’s the crucial point.
[The series] primarily aims to be engaging, but it also delves into the idea that monsters are frequently shaped by family, societal influences, or circumstances, rather than merely inherent traits. For [Oz], I believe both factors play a role… he is a product of his natural and nurtured environment.
In the closing moments of this episode, Oz finds himself in a perilous situation as Gotham collapses around him. The season finale is set to air next week.
