Why the NBA Doesn't Have Basketball Games on Election Day

As a seasoned actress with a career spanning decades, it’s heartening to see my peers and younger generations taking their civic duty seriously. The images of these celebrities voting, some for the first time, is a testament to the power of our voices and the importance of every vote.

Don’t expect to see your favorite basketball teams face off on Election Day.

On November 5th, while Americans are exercising their right to vote in the 2024 U.S. presidential election between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris along with her vice presidential pick Tim Walz, and Republican candidates Donald Trump and JD Vance or a third-party nominee, the NBA has decided not to schedule any games according to its announced 2024-2025 regular season calendar.

In 2022, for the first time, the league took action to stimulate voter participation in that year’s midterm elections.

At that time, James Cadogan, the Executive Director of the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition, expressed it was uncommon. He added, “That’s part of the value proposition that we want to make sure people understand, that voting is unlike anything else.”

As we approach this year’s Election Day, numerous celebrities have been vocal about having already cast their votes, inspiring their fan base to make use of their voting rights too.

On October 30th, Jennifer Aniston showcased an “I Voted” badge in a selfie she shared on Instagram, encouraging her followers with this message: “Regardless of who you are or where you reside, remember that your voice holds power. Your vote carries weight.
