As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of Marvel comics under my belt, I must admit that “Venom: The Last Dance” has managed to leave me both enthralled and somewhat bewildered. The symbiote saga unfolds with a flurry of familiar faces like Venom, Carnage, and Toxin, but their new hosts and connections to Marvel lore left me scratching my head more than once.

Venom’s Final Waltz

Up until now, Venom and Eddie Brock have clashed with symbiotes like Riot (with Carlton Drake) and Carnage (with Cletus Kasady. But it’s been made clear that there are countless other symbiotes lurking about, eager to find hosts and feed on life forms. In “The Last Dance“, we discover that Venom and Eddie have taken up a life on the run from symbiote hunters, as well as Earth’s police forces. This time, we delve deeper than ever into other symbiotes, starting with Toxin.

Carnage, who is Venom’s child, produced Toxin. For a short while, Detective Patrick Mulligan (played by Stephen Graham) hosted Toxin before he was taken away by Area 55 and the Imperium Project. There, Mulligan was linked to a new symbiote without a name, which seemed unique to this film. This extraterrestrial being had a strange teal color and didn’t survive long when a fight occurred.

In the movie, it appears that the symbiote known as Agony has a closer association with Marvel Comics. In this film adaptation, Dr. Teddy Payne (portrayed by Juno Temple), who seems to be modeled after Dr. Thaddeus Paine from the comics, bonds with Agony. While Paine is typically a villain in both Venom and Moon Knight stories, the portrayal of this character in the film seems friendlier. The symbiote here is not explicitly named but is clearly intended to be Agony. Notably, both Payne and Agony survive, suggesting potential future appearances in other movies.

The green creature linked with Sadie Christmas (portrayed by Clark Backo) remains nameless yet appears similar to Lasher. This suggests that this character might be derived from Lasher’s host, Sadie, in the 2019 comic book crossover event called “Absolute Carnage.” Meanwhile, the orange symbiote seems inspired by Phage, but its human counterpart, Jim the security guard (played by Jack Brady), doesn’t seem to have an apparent equivalent in the comics.

Currently showing in cinemas is “Venom: The Last Dance”. If you prefer to watch it at home, you can stream the original “Venom (2018)” on Disney+. As for “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, it’s available for streaming on Starz, DirecTV Stream, and the Roku Channel.
