As a gamer who has been hooked on Korean dramas for quite some time now, I can confidently say that Squid Game is one of the most captivating series I’ve ever seen. And to hear that the creator is almost done with Season 3 and it will be the final season? Well, that’s a bittersweet feeling, isn’t it?
The hit series “Squid Game” is set for a significant return on Netflix this year, with the creator revealing that the highly acclaimed show will conclude with its third season in the next year. Earlier this summer, it was unexpectedly announced that Season 2 of “Squid Game” would be released on Netflix in December, and that the series would also come back for a third and final season sometime in the following year.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m excitedly looking forward to diving back into the world of Squid Game when Season 2 premieres this December! Over the weekend at a For Your Consideration event, The Hollywood Reporter inquisitively asked our series creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, about his decision to wrap up the story after Season 3.
Why Squid Game Is Ending
Regarding the prospect of more episodes following the success of the initial season, Squid Game series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk acknowledged the significant pressure involved, saying, “I certainly felt a certain level of pressure knowing there was so much excitement among fans. To be honest, when I was developing season one, I hadn’t mapped out specific plans for additional seasons.” However, he also shared that despite this pressure, he had ideas for continuing Gi-Hun’s story in potential second and third seasons.
Initially, I had an idea for a potential second season focusing on Gi-hun’s journey. He would re-enter the games with the intention of ending them altogether following his experiences in season one. Dong-hyuk mentioned that we’ll follow Gi-hun’s journey throughout seasons two and three, both geographically and emotionally. As for the third and final season, Gi-hun’s storyline will come to a natural conclusion.
Squid Game Season 3 Tells the Final Story
As I pondered over the concept for Squid Game season three’s ending, it seemed to flow organically to me that this was the final chapter,” Dong-hyuk explained. “I felt that with this narrative, I had managed to convey everything I wanted to express about the story of Squid Game and the character of Gi-hun, and I thought there was no need for more stories moving forward.
As a passionate gamer, I was thrilled when “Squid Game” finally graced our screens after years of waiting. It’s astonishing to learn that the creator has managed to devise a plan for two more seasons, which is quite unusual given the story’s climactic potential. Unlike other productions that might be abruptly cut short by Netflix or external forces, it appears that “Squid Game” will conclude on its own terms. This suggests that we can expect a prelude to the final season next year, and I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach the premiere of “Squid Game” Season 2 on Netflix starting December 26th.
