Succession and Sex Education stars join Waitrose Christmas advert for whodunnit mystery

As a seasoned cinephile with a soft spot for British television and a penchant for whodunnits, this year’s Waitrose Christmas advert has truly stolen my heart (and my appetite)! The star-studded cast of characters from beloved shows like Sex Education, Succession, Fleabag, and Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple has me reminiscing about the golden age of television murder mysteries.

Waitrose has gone live with its fun Christmas advert for 2024, showcasing a superb whodunnit.

The ad, featuring celebrities from Sex Education and Succession, comes together for some holiday-themed merriment.

The advert, called Sweet Suspicion: A Waitrose Mystery, marks the start of the retailer’s festive plans.

On Christmas Day, a family of passionate food enthusiasts prepares their feast, but to their surprise and disappointment, they find out that the highly-anticipated No. 1 Waitrose Red Velvet Bauble Dessert has mysteriously vanished from its place!

In a casual rephrasing: A novice sleuth, portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen from Succession, embarks on uncovering the identity of the person who stole the delicious dessert.

Was it Grandma? Samira? Or someone completely hidden in plain sight?

Joe Wilkinson, Rakhee Thakrar, Sian Clifford, Dustin Demri-Burns, and Eryl Maynard are added to the impressive cast alongside Macfadyen in the high-profile two-part commercial.

Regarding his detective character, Macfadyen mused: “Could it be that my previous detective roles built up over time that ultimately brought me here – acting in this intriguing mystery for Waitrose?

Working alongside this fantastic team on this delightful holiday production brought me immense pleasure. I believe collectively, we’ve crafted a tale that will leave audiences guessing the true identity of the Christmas pudding thief!

Nathan Ansell, who holds the position of Customer Director at Waitrose, commented: “This year, we’re adding an element of surprise to our Christmas advertisement by unveiling a ‘mystery whodunit’ festive crime drama starring a talented ensemble cast.

Our holiday season promotion emphasizes that Waitrose Christmas fare is so mouthwateringly scrumptious, you’re eagerly anticipating savoring it, which is why we’ve highlighted the cream of our delectable selection and infused some cheerful holiday merriment and shimmer!

“Was it Uncle Phil? Was it Fig the cat? You’ll have to wait and see!”
