Nintendo President Gives Update on Switch 2 Announcement Window

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Nintendo adventures under my belt, I can’t help but feel a familiar mix of anticipation and patience as the whispers about the “Nintendo Switch 2” continue to circulate. The prospect of another evolution in portable gaming is tantalizing, especially since the original Switch has been my trusty companion through countless commutes and sleepless nights.

Hey there fellow gamers! Remember way back in May when Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, hinted at a big reveal for their upcoming gaming system before our current fiscal year ends? Well, we’ve been on tenterhooks ever since, but information about the supposedly titled “Nintendo Switch 2” has been scarce.

People are eagerly awaiting an announcement about the new system before the end of 2024, with a potential release date in early 2025. The Nintendo Switch was successfully launched globally in March 2017, and it seems that this timeframe could be repeated for the upcoming platform. However, the exact timing hinges on when the official announcement is made. Historically, Nintendo Direct presentations have taken place in February, so we might see a similar event next year, providing more details about the system. In 2023, Furukawa hinted that there would be less time between the system’s announcement and release compared to the Switch, which means an announcement in January or February followed by a launch in May or June is not out of the question.

Currently, there’s not much information available regarding the system. Many publishers and developers seem to be waiting for an official announcement from Nintendo before unveiling any games for this platform. Notably, Playtonic Games has revealed their game Yooka-Replaylee for various “Nintendo platforms,” suggesting that it could potentially be released on the upcoming Switch 2 rather than the existing one. Nevertheless, we have no official confirmation from Nintendo themselves, beyond whispers about potential games such as a new 3D Mario and the next version of Mario Kart.

Currently, our knowledge about Switch 2 is limited, but the upcoming games for the current console in 2025 are beginning to take shape. In January, we can expect the launch of “Donkey Kong Country Returns HD”, and in March, it’s “Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition”. Both these releases are remasters of previous games. Nintendo has also confirmed two new original titles for the following year – “Pokemon Legends: Z-A” and “Metroid Prime 4”. However, neither game has a fixed release date at present.

A press briefing by Furukawa coincided with Nintendo’s recent financial updates. The sales of the current Switch console have dipped below projected figures, a fact that isn’t surprising given it’s been almost eight years old. Nevertheless, software for the Switch is still thriving; for instance, the latest release, “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” has shifted an impressive 2.58 million units since its September debut.
