As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and anticipation when it comes to Matthew Lillard reprising his role as William Afton in the upcoming “Five Nights at Freddy’s” sequel. Having been left out of sequels for other movies that developed huge fan bases, like Scream, this feels like a rare opportunity to be part of something truly special.
In the game “Five Nights at Freddy’s,” Matthew Lillard portrayed William Afton, a significant character. Next year, Lillard is set to reprise his role for the sequel, and he appears quite thrilled about the opportunity. Recently, in an interview with GamesRadar+, Lillard discussed how he was excluded from sequels of other films that cultivated massive fan bases. However, this isn’t the case for “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,” which has increased his excitement for the upcoming installment. Furthermore, it seems that Afton may have a more extensive part in the sequel than he did in the original film.
Initially, I was unaware of the magnitude of what we were embarking upon when we began. My children, particularly Ace, were fans of Five Nights at Freddy’s, and it was Ace who urged me to take on this job when the opportunity arose. The director, Emma Tammi, also felt the same way, emphasizing that while there isn’t much action in the first movie, William Afton is essentially the embodiment of evil in the series. Additionally, having been overlooked in several sequels, I was thrilled at the prospect of becoming an integral part of a dedicated community. The creator of the game, Scott Cawthon, even suggested that in the near future, it would be hard for fans not to associate William Afton with my portrayal.
In the absence of explicit mention from Lillard, it seems plausible that he’s referring to the Scream sequels he wasn’t part of. Similar to Five Nights at Freddy’s, Lillard played one of the two antagonists in the original Scream movie. His character, Stu Macher, met his end following a confrontation with series lead Sidney Prescott. Since then, five sequels have been produced, bringing back several key characters, including Lillard’s cohort Billy Loomis (portrayed by Skeet Ulrich). Lillard has frequently expressed a desire to rejoin the Scream universe, but no official news about this has emerged yet.

Although Damian Lillard may not revisit the Scream series, it’s certain that he’ll star in another horror franchise soon. As of now, specifics about the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel are scarce, but it’s set to hit theaters on December 5, 2025. As we move into the new year, we might learn more about the plot and Lillard’s character Afton in the film. The original Five Nights at Freddy’s was a massive success, yet it remains to be seen if its sequel will match that box office and streaming popularity. Here’s hoping the franchise continues to captivate fans of the game series, as well as Lillard, who expressed his desire for multiple sequels in the past.
