As a seasoned lifestyle expert with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Matt Choi‘s actions at the New York City Marathon were regrettable and unacceptable. His disregard for the rules, community, and safety of other participants is concerning.
Matt Choi has crossed his final New York Marathon finish line.
The running influencer has been banned from the New York City Marathon for life after running in the annual race Nov. 3 while being followed by two E-Bikes with people filming him.
According to a statement released on November 5th, as a result of infractions against World Athletics rules and the Code of Conduct and Rules of Competition set by New York Road Runners, Matt Choi has been disqualified from the 2024 TCS New York City Marathon and his results have been expunged. Furthermore, he is now prohibited from participating in any future races organized by New York Road Runners. (Runner’s World)
Afterward, the runner residing in Austin, Texas, who boasts an impressive following of over 800,000 on his various social media platforms, subsequently posted a response regarding his suspension.
Choi admitted that he made a mistake in his marathon run, which clocked in at over two hours and 57 minutes. He wasn’t expecting to make this video, but there are no excuses. Period. On race day, Choi was self-centered by allowing his brother and videographer to follow him on electric bikes, a decision that had severe repercussions.
In fact, the influencer mirrored the concerns expressed by several other online users regarding his actions during the yearly New York running extravaganza, which included comments from people who pointed out instances where cyclists obstructed long-distance runners participating in the marathon.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I acknowledge my mistake during the New York City Marathon. Instead of focusing on the collective spirit, I unintentionally disrupted other runners’ progress. Those aiming for personal best times and those seeking water were affected by my actions. The marathon is about unity, about the community—I let that slip and made it all about me. To anyone I may have inconvenienced, I offer my sincere apologies.
The 29-year-old emphasized that he was the only one to blame for the controversy—not his brother nor his videographer.
He expressed that he became overly enthusiastic about capturing all the shots, and mentioned that he wouldn’t challenge the decision. Essentially, he acknowledged his mistake and accepted the consequences. Previously, he had been criticized for using E-Bikes to produce content, but he assured it wouldn’t happen again. His promise stands firm.
Despite participating in the 2023 Austin Marathon on an e-bike for filming purposes and facing criticism then, Choi underlined in a recent video’s caption that “e-bikes have no place in racing events.
