As a dedicated follower and admirer of Andy Samberg‘s comedic genius, it’s heartwarming to see him back on Studio 8H after all these years. His return to SNL as Doug Emhoff might seem like a breeze given his seven-year stint, but the nerves are still very much alive. It’s like riding a bike, they say, but this bike has live television, sketch comedy, and the pressure of being on one of the world’s most iconic shows!
Live from New York it’s Andy Samberg feeling the nerves again.
More recently, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live returned to Studio 8H to depict Vice President Kamala Harris’ spouse, Doug Emhoff, for NBC’s comedy show during its season 50 election coverage. However, his seven years of involvement with SNL didn’t necessarily simplify his comeback.
Samberg expressed on the October 28th episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast that he’s enjoyed himself immensely. He added that returning to whatever he was referring to brought back the fun, but also reminded him of the stress associated with it, realizing anew that ‘this is intense.’
However, at age 46, he pointed out that he and his fellow alumnus Maya Rudolph, who reprises her role as the democratic presidential nominee in this instance, both share the sentiment that the tension isn’t as severe as during their initial stint on the program.
Me and Maya have been discussing how the atmosphere is a bit more relaxed since we both know our specific roles there,” he went on, mentioning an event from October 19th that made him rather anxious. “I remember thinking, ‘If this Beetlejuice project doesn’t pan out, I won’t participate at all.’ This sentiment brings back the sensation of being a cast member – you’re always vulnerable.
In case you missed it, he appeared alongside Michael Keaton during the opening monologue. “Aren’t you usually portraying Doug Emhoff in those cold opens?” Keaton inquired, to which Samberg responded, “Indeed, the writers couldn’t fit him in this time. So here we are instead!
7 years ago, in 2012, the main actor of Brooklyn Nine-Nine bid farewell to the late-night show’s cast after spending 7 seasons on the Brooklyn Nine-Nine series.
In the July episode of Hart to Heart, Samberg expressed, “It felt like I couldn’t take it any longer, but I didn’t feel ready to depart.
He stated that the physical strain was immense and he felt as if he hadn’t slept in years. Essentially, they were working on content for the live show every Tuesday night without end, followed by a table read on Wednesday. Then, they were given another task: create a digital short. This meant writing throughout Thursday, staying up all Thursday night, not sleeping, waking up, filming on Friday, and editing from Friday night straight into Saturday.
After four days of little sleep, he admitted, “I just kinda fell apart physically.”
