5 reasons Emmerdale needs Robert Sugden back more than ever

As a long-time fan of Emmerdale, I must say that the absence of Robert Sugden has left a significant void in the show. His complex relationship with Aaron, their tumultuous past, and the deep bond they shared make them the epitome of a true soap opera power couple.

Among the ex-characters of Emmerdale that fans are always eager to learn about, none captures our interest quite like Robert Sugden, portrayed by Ryan Hawley. Lately, there’s been a fresh wave of conversations revolving around him.

Ross Barton (played by Michael Parr) disclosed that Rebecca White (portrayed by Emily Head) had passed away off-camera, causing her and her son, Seb, to move in with her aunt instead.

This all came as a shock to Robert’s sister Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) and his ex-husband Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). Although the latter is currently dating Vic and Robert’s newfound half-brother John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth), Aaron couldn’t help reminiscing over happier times with Robert and Seb.

In this situation, John seemed out of place, but Victoria motivated him to engage with Aaron. Unfortunately, their conversation regarding Robert turned out to be awkward, as Aaron appeared hesitant to discuss the topic.

Eventually, he started to reveal more about himself, yet asserted that he no longer felt love for Robert. But John’s critical comments on Robert’s violent deeds made Aaron retort heatedly that John was misinformed, and then proceeded to eject him from his residence.

It’s not known to John that it was Robert who had actually murdered the man who assaulted Victoria. Despite serving a 14-year sentence, Robert has already served five years. In the world of soap operas, it wouldn’t be surprising if he were granted an early release.

5 reasons Emmerdale needs Robert Sugden back more than ever

1. Challenging John Sugden

5 reasons Emmerdale needs Robert Sugden back more than ever

It’s been considered that John might not be who he claims to be, given that there’s no independent evidence supporting his claim of being the late Jack Sugden’s (Clive Hornby) son.

It’s not surprising that womanizer Jack got involved in another romantic encounter, but we’re still a bit skeptical about John. Regardless of his recent clarification about who Aidan Moore is, there are lingering doubts in our minds.

There’s a possibility he might be deceiving us, it could be regarding his real self or hidden agendas. Robert, with his discerning abilities, would make an ideal candidate for uncovering the truth!

Apart from recognizing it, we must acknowledge that John’s actions seem eerily similar to Aaron’s interactions with Robert. This pattern includes their secret meetings on a deserted road, as well as their seclusion in a barn. There are further connections yet to be uncovered.

Could it be that I’ve stumbled upon a familiar tale between Aaron and Robert, a story so vivid it seems John may have known about their past exploits all along? Or could this repeated narrative simply be an unlikely coincidence?

Something about John seems a bit off, and Robert appears to be exactly the right individual to step up and handle this situation!

2. Reunion with Aaron Dingle

In the realm of soap operas, the love story between Robron from Emmerdale ranks among the most remarkable, and their fanbase remains deeply devoted to them even today.

Initially, the relationship between Robert and Aaron was extremely harmful, but over time, Robert changed for the better and Aaron addressed his mental health issues. As a result, they established a secure and loving household together.

Just as Robert and his partner found contentment within their marriage, it eventually came time for him to retire gracefully. Unfortunately, this transition necessitated a heart-wrenching separation that felt authentic.

However, Aaron’s relationships following his time with Robert seem to lack the emotional richness and mutual soulmate connection that they once shared – it goes without saying, as they were truly meant for each other.

If Robert were to make his comeback, an eventual reunion with Aaron would have to factor in.

3. Raising son Seb White

Currently, Seb resides in Bristol, a decision that was supported by Robert following Rebecca’s passing. It was unfortunate that neither Victoria nor Aaron had a role in this transition, and it appeared unusual that Victoria, among others, was not consulted or given the opportunity to assist in caring for Seb.

However, should Robert come back and gain custody of Seb, a sense of order might be reestablished. This would allow Seb to continue maintaining ties with Rebecca’s family, particularly his great-aunt, as well as step-grandma Diane Sugden (Elizabeth Estensen) in Portugal, through regular visits.

It’s unfortunate that Seb, being a traditionally important figure in our family, isn’t actively participating in village life, which would help preserve our surname. However, this could be possible if Robert manages to take care of Seb full-time.

4. Reconnecting with sister Victoria Sugden

It’s clear that Victoria has been going through some tough times lately. Her brief relationship with Jacob Gallagher (played by Joe-Warren Plant) seemed to serve little purpose, and even after discovering a possible new sibling in John (or is it him?), she continues to be sidelined from the main storyline.

John doesn’t seem keen on learning about the extensive family history that Vic wishes to discuss, yet he shared a deep connection with Robert that is deeply felt and missed.

Victoria thrived when playfully interfering in Robert’s life and frequently sharing deep conversations with him, and she finds the added security in being around Robert particularly comforting.

Despite his instability, Victoria managed to keep him balanced; lately, however, Victoria could use a bit more excitement to liven up her dull existence.

5. Revive the Sugden dynasty

Due to John’s unusual behavior, Victoria spending less time on screen, and niece Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) barely acknowledging her roots in Emmerdale’s founding family, it seems that the show could benefit greatly from Robert’s return to elevate the Sugdens back to their past prominence.

Currently, one can’t help but ponder the purpose behind including John in our group, and if indeed he is Jack’s offspring, he appears to require more support than just Victoria by his side.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve always admired the Sugdens for their unbreakable family ties. Somehow, Robert could rekindle the essence of why we all fell in love with them initially by strengthening those emotional connections that have seemed to fade.
