Next Virtua Fighter Officially in Development, Confirms Sega

As an old-school gamer who’s been around since the arcade days of yore, the news about the return of Virtua Fighter is like a long-lost friend knocking on my virtual doorstep. I remember those late nights spent in front of the cabinet, my fingers dancing over the buttons, trying to master the moves of Akira Yuki and his pals.

18 years following the release of “Virtua Fighter 5”, Sega has officially announced that a fresh chapter for this series is being worked on.

Justin Scarpone, the executive VP and head of Sega’s Global Transmedia Group, recently shared in an interview with VGC that they currently have a number of games in development which fall under their legacy category, as announced at The Game Awards last year. These include titles such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, and another installment of Virtua Fighter is also being worked on.

Furthermore, this is quite thrilling! In some cases, we’re not just stopping there; we’re also producing animated series or live-action movies to enrich the experience and align with our plans.

It’s been buzzing around for a while now, but there haven’t been many concrete details yet: it seems that the next installment of Virtua Fighter could be on its way. If true, this series revival appears to position itself against heavyweights like Tekken and Street Fighter. However, it looks like the new game will emphasize esports and online multiplayer experiences, complete with crossplay and rollback netcode. Matches are expected to have a competitive ranking system, similar to modern fighters, while streaming and spectating are said to be crucial aspects of the game.

It’s said that offline modes are still available, introducing a fresh main story and reviving Quest Mode with some modifications. Additionally, it appears that the character designs now exhibit a more contemporary look.

It’s yet to be determined when it will come out, but considering that Sega unveiled all their reboots at the 2019 Game Awards, there’s a good chance that 2020 could be the year of Virtua Fighter. Keep an eye out for more news until we have further details.
