As a dedicated follower of all things adorable and rare, I can’t help but be smitten by both Moo Deng and Haggis, our newfound pygmy hippo queens. Having spent years in wildlife conservation efforts, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of these creatures and the challenges they face in the wild.
Move over, Moo Deng.
Indeed, there’s still space at Edinburgh Zoo for Haggis, our newest resident, as well as a pygmy hippo that is eager to take center stage in the spotlight.
Haggis, a newborn calf, was welcomed into the world by his parents Otto and Gloria on October 30th. The joyous news of his arrival was shared on the zoo’s website on November 4th, using a fun and intriguing phrase as a headline: “Who’s the Moo Deng Now?
Johnny Appleyard, head of the hoofstock team at Edinburgh Zoo, expressed delight as Haggis is progressing quite well. He’s particularly thrilled to notice Haggis’s emerging personality. “The initial 30 days are crucial for her growth,” he added, explaining that to monitor mom and baby closely during this sensitive period, the pygmy hippo enclosure will be temporarily closed.
Johnny noted that the birth of Haggis and the viral love around Moo Deng has raised awareness for the animals—who have officially been declared endangered.
“While Thailand’s Moo Deng has become a viral global icon, it is important to remember that pygmy hippos are incredibly rare,” he continued. “It is great to have our own little ambassador right here in Edinburgh to connect with our visitors and help raise awareness of the challenges the species face in the wild.”
Already, Haggis’ social media team is actively responding. Once news of the slight spread online, they issued a sort of apology to Moo Deng and Thailand’s Khao Kheow Open Zoo for creating a competitive situation between their two small elephants.
On November 4th, a post in our notes app apologized: “It was unfair to compare Haggis and Moo Deng.” We now understand that there’s room for both these remarkable pygmy hippo stars in this world. Let’s appreciate them all! Our sincere apologies to Moo Deng. Let’s collaborate on a remix instead, celebrating their unique talents together.
Of course, there’s enough space for both of them, as their popularity has shed light on the hippopotamus species indigenous to Liberia and other West African forests and swamps. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), approximately 2,500 of these animals survive in the wild, primarily due to habitat destruction.
Back in July, the initial pygmy hippo, affectionately known as Moo Deng, gracefully entered the world. Since then, she’s been winning over hearts (and even got a spot on Saturday Night Live) across the global web) and has nearly doubled the number of visitors at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo since her birth in July, according to World Animal Protection.
As a fervent admirer, let me express my unbridled enthusiasm for none other than Moo Deng, the captivating “Bouncing Pig”! This enchanting creature has sparked a wave of memes and merchandise that’s swept across the globe. Yet, her grand entrance hasn’t been without a stir, as the zoo has felt compelled to advise visitors: approach Moo Deng when she’s awake, rather than hurling objects or drenching her in a misguided attempt to rouse her from slumber.
Narongwit Chodchoi, the zoo director, emphasized through the BBC that the behaviors being exhibited are not just unkind but also risky. He underscored the importance of safeguarding these creatures and providing them with a secure and comfortable habitat.
But online, there continues to be an outpour of love for the creature.
According to a user’s observation during the hippo’s initial rise to fame, she was dubbed as “the most stunning woman globally.
