Knives Out 3: Daniel Craig Hopes Netflix Sequel Hits Theaters

As a long-time movie enthusiast who’s seen more films than I can count on both hands (and maybe a foot or two), I wholeheartedly agree with Daniel Craig’s sentiments about the magic of watching movies in a theater. There’s nothing quite like the shared experience of laughter, gasps, and cheers with a room full of fellow film fans. I remember the thrill of seeing the original “Knives Out” in the cinema, and I can only imagine how much more exciting it would be to see “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” on the big screen.

There’s no denying the convenience of an exciting movie landing on Netflix and fans around the world all being able to check out the experience from the comfort of their own homes, though another undeniable argument is that there’s nothing quite like enjoying a movie in a theater. In this sense, while Daniel Craig is excited about the upcoming release of Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix, he’s also encouraging the platform to bring the movie to theaters. The previous installment from Netflix, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, landed in theaters for a week, with Craig hoping the next entry gets to enjoy a longer run in cinemas. Wake Up Dead Man is expected to be released sometime in 2025.

Craig openly shared with Variety that he desires the sequel to run in theaters for more than a week. He expressed hope that Netflix might extend its release, allowing audiences to enjoy it at cinemas. Most of the people he interacts with – the fans, as I understand it – yearn for the opportunity to watch it on the big screen with their families. If possible, we’d love to provide them with that theater experience.

The “Knives Out” series is the creation of writer/director Rian Johnson, who presented its initial installment in cinemas back in 2019, marking his significant release since the controversial “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” Despite boasting an illustrious cast that included Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ana de Armas, the film was still unexpectedly successful. It ultimately grossed $313 million against a reported production budget of just $40 million. Not only did it appeal to viewers, but it was also highly acclaimed by critics, currently holding a 97% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an aggregator platform.

Following the remarkable financial and critical acclaim of ‘Knives Out’, a fierce competition among distributors ensued, with Netflix coming out on top to secure additional installments for the series. The agreement was made for two further entries, and although ‘Glass Onion’ only had a one-week run in 600 theaters, this marked the broadest release yet for a Netflix original movie. Other films, such as last year’s ‘The Killer’, ‘May December’, and ‘Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire’, did receive theatrical showings, but these were usually during film festivals or for limited timeframes.

As a movie enthusiast like myself, it’s clear that Netflix primarily functions as a streaming service, meaning they encourage viewers to enjoy their content from the comfort of their homes. However, there are instances where movies are shown in theaters – either due to contractual obligations with filmmakers or for satisfying criteria needed for award nominations.

In addition to the main cast of Wake Up Dead Man, you’ll see Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

Stay tuned for updates on Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery before it debuts in 2025.
