As a dedicated follower of Pharrell Williams’ journey, I can’t help but admire his resilience and versatility. From his humble beginnings at McDonald’s, where he was three times fired for his love of chicken nuggets, to his current status as a multi-hyphenate artist, fashion designer, and producer, Pharrell has undeniably come a long way.
Snacking on the job makes Pharrell Williams happy.
Actually, the music producer has disclosed that, prior to achieving success in music, his fondness for McDonald’s drew him both towards and away from a specific job opportunity.
During an interview on BBC Radio 2 on November 5th, Pharrell shared that McDonald’s was his first and only job. He admitted to getting dismissed from work not once, but three times. It seems he couldn’t resist snacking on those tasty chicken nuggets while on the clock.
But it wasn’t just his love for Ronald McDonald’s chicken that impacted his work performance.
Pharrell explained, “The first couple of instances were simply due to laziness. The third time, though, it was more like, ‘What on earth are you up to? You’re just lounging around munching on nuggets.’
Despite not excelling in the fast food industry, the singer of “Blurred Lines” – father of 16-year-old Rocket Ayer and 7-year-old triplets with wife Helen Lasichanh – clearly discovered paths to success elsewhere.
At the age of 40, Pharrell had three number-one hits in a single year, and he shared with The Hollywood Reporter in September that these tracks were all written for others to perform. Regarding ‘Get Lucky’, he said, “I was composing a song for someone else to sing, and if I had sung it myself, it might not have been as successful because I would have focused on my ego.” When the song became popular, he admitted that he was taken aback, saying, “Wow! Wait a minute. Let me collect myself.” This experience, he added, humbled him.
Afterward, when his composition “Happy,” initially intended for CeeLo Green but later dismissed by the record label, climbed to the top position and stayed there for a full ten weeks, he was utterly astonished.
Pharrell said, “When that record suddenly became popular, it wasn’t as if I had planned one day to create a song about an emotion. Instead, I found myself moved to tears, questioning, ‘What’s happening, God?’
In that particular instant, the versatile individual—who had been appointed Men’s Creative Director at Louis Vuitton back in February 2023—came to understand just how profoundly collaborative efforts could enhance his creative endeavors.
“I composed this song, I produced it, I sold these records, here’s what I sold…” It was all about him. However, the three No. 1 hits he created in collaboration with others opened his eyes to the many other contributing factors involved.
