As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating through virtual worlds filled with superheroes and their epic battles, I must say that the latest turn of events in The Ultimates has left me stunned and saddened. The death of Iron Lad, Tony Stark’s younger self, is a blow that resonates deeply within the comic book community.
For the first time in official operation, The Ultimates – an alternate version of the Avengers – suffer a brutal defeat and an unforeseen fatality. They’ve been battling against the sinister council secretly manipulating the world, orchestrated by The Maker. Tony Stark (Iron Lad) has enlisted several heroes for The Ultimates, such as Wasp, Giant-Man, America Chavez, She-Hulk, and Hawkeye. As their ranks expand, The Ultimates decide it’s time to confront The Maker’s council on a rescue mission. However, events take an unfortunate turn when they face Bruce Banner’s Hulk in combat. One battle results in the loss of a team member.
Issue #6 of “Ultimates” features the creative duo of Deniz Camp, Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee, and VC’s Travis Lanham. In this storyline, Tony Stark assembles the Ultimates in front of a Damage Control black site containing more than a dozen super-powered captives. This is our first glimpse of the entire Ultimates team united, as they get ready to breach the facility with the aim of rescuing the prisoners. However, only everyone except Doom (Reed Richards) participates in the mission. Fortunately for them, Doom’s ability to teleport proves crucial when the mission takes a turn for the worse and he manages to transport them safely back home.

Upon bursting open the door, the Ultimates discover they are not in a secret facility, but rather within the ancient city of K’un-Lun. Here, Hulk wields dominion over all seven capitals of Heaven, transforming his fury into tranquility. Yet, he remains unyielding, delivering a single strike that fells She-Hulk. With his immortal weapons now in action, they target the Ultimates. Overwhelmed by Hulk and his forces, it seems the heroes have no hope of victory. Just as Hulk prepares to end She-Hulk’s life, Doom swiftly transports the Ultimates to safety. The closing scene reveals the price they paid for this mission: “Iron Lad is no more,” She-Hulk laments.
Ultimate Hulk smashes Tony Stark like a bug
In a stark contrast to the Hulk we’re accustomed to from Earth-616, this Ultimate Hulk is remarkably different. While we’ve encountered villainous variations of the Hulk, like Maestro and the Hulk in ‘Old Man Logan’, this Hulk stands out as he has embraced the mystic arts, transforming him into a more contemplative figure than the previously depicted “perpetually enraged” giant. Instead of instantly engaging in combat when faced with the Ultimates, he extends an offer of tea. However, when She-Hulk initiates hostilities, Hulk swiftly defeats her with a single punch, showcasing his Atomic Iron Fist prowess. Given their location in K’un-Lun, it seems that Hulk has acquired the legendary Iron Fist abilities.
When conflict erupts, the Ultimates struggle to keep pace with their opponents. What was devoured by Fat Cobra is later revealed to have grown colossal and burst free from his stomach. Despite Giant-Man’s belief that she perished, she enlarges dramatically. Tony Stark finds himself powerless against Hulk, who delivers impactful blows akin to an atomic bomb detonation in Hiroshima. The Hulk ultimately ends Tony’s life by lifting him up by the arms and exerting lethal pressure on his body. As Iron Lad’s armor succumbs to the force, a deafening crunch is heard.
In the heat of the battle, I bravely attempt to intervene, but Hulk’s immense strength leaves me with a painful injury to my right hand and fingers. Fortunately, Doctor Doom’s teleportation saves She-Hulk from Hulk’s final blow. The gamma radiation coursing through my body miraculously begins healing my hand, but it seems Tony Stark isn’t so fortunate.
Marvel reveals Ultimate Wolverine and Nick Fury
Up next in my gaming world, it’s the annual one-shot for the Ultimate Universe: “Ultimate Universe: One Year Later” #1. This comic unveils the debut of none other than Ultimate Nick Fury, alongside the formidable Ultimate Wolverine, also recognized as the Winter Soldier – a secret weapon that the Maker has been keeping under wraps.
In “Ultimate Universe: One Year In,” Camp aimed to accomplish three main objectives: First, provide a welcoming introduction to the Ultimate Universe for new readers; second, offer enriching connections between various Ultimate series for longtime readers; and third, establish the foundation for upcoming tales as we approach the reappearance of the Maker. Simultaneously, this story will be a self-contained, engaging issue that offers the perspective of the antagonists. It’s going to be a grim, somewhat cruel narrative, but thanks to Jonas Scharf, it will also be visually stunning.
