As a longtime follower of the gaming industry and a passionate fan of Private Division’s unique offerings, this news has left me somewhat perplexed and slightly melancholic. The label, known for its exceptional indie titles like “OlliOlli,” “Rollerdrome,” and the upcoming “Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game,” has always been a beacon of innovation and quality in an increasingly homogenized market.
In simple terms, it’s been revealed that Private Division, a label under Take-Two Interactive renowned for publishing indie games, has been bought by an unidentified buyer. This transaction was disclosed during their second-quarter financial report for fiscal year 2025, but the exact cost remains undisclosed.
In an interview with Variety, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained that the decision to sell some of their labels was made to channel resources into expanding their primary businesses over the long term. The transaction encompasses all of the label’s existing works, such as titles scheduled for 2025 like “Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game” and “Project Bloom,” developed by Game Freak. However, one title, “No Rest for the Wicked,” currently in early access on PC from Moon Studios, is not part of this deal.
Zelnick expressed his appreciation for the valuable input provided by The Private Division team to Take Two, and he is optimistic that they will carry on thriving in their future endeavors,” (paraphrased)
For a while now, there have been significant shifts happening within the company, which began with rumors of mass layoffs among most of the workforce back in May. At the same time, Roll7 Studios (known for developing games like OlliOlli and Rollerdrome) and Intercept Games (developers of Kerbal Space Program 2) were closed down around the same period. Additionally, they terminated their collaboration with Bloober Team for Project C, which is believed to be Cronos: The New Dawn. In June, there were whispers that Take-Two might either close down or sell off the label altogether.
