As a dedicated fan who has followed Tosh’s journey through the stormy seas of Shetland, I must say that this season has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The way Alison O’Donnell portrays Tosh’s resilience and determination is simply captivating.
In the premiere of Shetland’s ninth season, Tosh made every effort to find Annie Bett after she went missing. Tragically, during a search at a nearby construction site alongside DI Ruth Calder (Ashley Jensen), he discovered the body of his friend.
In such a situation where your friend is wounded and bleeding, it’s the private concerns that suddenly become prominent. One thought that immediately surfaces is “What about her child?” For a moment, Tosh seems to lose balance.
However, she’s speaking with Billy over the phone, an obligation that comes with parenthood. It seems this is a lesson learned – no matter how chaotic things get, one must remain the guiding force.
Afterward, for just a fleeting instance, she’s the friend. But soon enough, her police hat is back on, and she’s juggling the challenges of managing logistics and practicalities.
Once again, Tosh faces a trial, but as O’Donnell pointed out, “her consistent performance over multiple seasons demonstrates that she’s perfectly suited for her role.
She’s the type who can handle such tasks effectively. She demonstrates leadership and initiative, which is precisely what’s needed in this situation. In other words, she needs to step up and take action.
The building site at which Annie’s corpse was found is owned by Ian, her estranged spouse who has also gone missing. Interestingly, Ian is a good friend of Tosh’s companion, Donnie, creating tension within their friendship dynamic.
O’Donnell remarked, “This situation hits her particularly hard, and it’s uncomfortably close.” It’s not just Tosh who’s affected, but also Donnie. Their bond is facing some challenges, making it a tough road ahead.
One distinctive trait of Tosh lies in her unwavering integrity concerning her work. Regardless of the challenges, she consistently chooses what’s morally correct for each situation.
“It’s complicated with your partner because you seem to prioritize the case above all else. At some stage, I believe she needs to step back and reconsider. It’s not as simple as right or wrong.
O’Donnell went on to say that Tosh, for all of her efforts, won’t come out of season 9 “unscathed”.
By the end of the series, her connections weren’t as they initially were at the start. (She said this)
On Wednesday, the 13th of November, Shetland resumes on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
