As a long-time fan of the Farrelly brothers and their unique brand of humor, I am absolutely thrilled about their latest creation, “Dear Santa.” With a 15-year gestation period, it’s clear that this movie has been carefully crafted and nurtured, much like a holiday goose in a Christmas story.
On Wednesday, Bobby and Peter Farrelly revealed the initial glimpse of their upcoming film titled “Dear Santa“, featuring Jack Black portraying Satan. In this movie, a young boy accidentally mispells “Santa” in his letter, resulting in an invitation for Satan to come to his house instead. Despite Black donning red and white fur, it’s evident that he’s not the cheerful Santa Claus we’re familiar with.
Initial snapshots from the movie “Dear Santa” were shared by Entertainment Weekly, who had a chat with the Farrelly brothers regarding their long-awaited production. In these images, Black seems unusually restrained, yet his attire more than compensates for it. The colors are acceptable, but the fur texture appears ominous and he is adorned with leather belts and chains. The Farrellys disclosed that they’ve been nurturing this concept for approximately 15 years, allowing it to mature over time. Their last joint project was Dumb and Dumber To.
Peter mentioned, “This film has been in development for quite some time, similar to our other productions.” Interestingly, both “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary” took five and ten years respectively to come into being. We also reworked an old script for “Kingpin”. These projects often take their sweet time before they’re ready, and this one was no exception.
Bobby clarified that they chose Black’s character, Satan, because they needed someone who could portray a mischievous yet charming devilishness. He added, “Jack embodies this role perfectly with his expressive eyebrows and facial expressions, always carrying an undercurrent of mischief, yet maintaining a likable demeanor. That’s just Jack. Our goal was not to create a horror film but rather a comedic one. We aimed to make it enjoyable for the audience while still respecting the iconic character of Satan. And Jack was the ideal choice for this balance.
It’s said that Black showed great eagerness to be part of the film, expressing to Bobby that he felt destined for this particular role. The director revealed that Black independently sent them a picture of himself dressed in a self-made costume, which eventually influenced the character’s appearance in the movie.
The starring role goes to Robert Timothy Smith as Liam Turner, the boy who summoned evil into his house on Christmas. Other child stars include Jaden Carson Baker and Kai Cech, while adults Brianne Howes, Hayes MacArthur and PJ Byrne fill out the cast. Bobby shouted out Keegan-Michael Key, saying: “Keegan, anytime you can get him in a comedy, it’s a home run. And I was just so happy when we had a role that I thought Keegan would be great for. Keegan plays the kid’s therapist, and he just as always knocks it out of the park and he comes with ideas, and he’s just so much fun to work with.”
You don’t have to wait much longer to witness it yourself! The premiere of “Dear Santa” is taking place on Monday, November 25th, exclusively on Paramount+.
