Marvel Reveals How Cyclops and Magneto Formed the New X-Men After Krakoa

As a seasoned gamer of comic book lore, I find myself enthralled by the latest developments in the X-Men saga. The new team led by Cyclops and the enigmatic presence of Magneto at the Factory have certainly stirred up some intrigue. The forced mutation of humans into homo sapiens superior is a bold move, one that I can’t help but see as a double-edged sword.

Approximately X months past, a fresh squad of X-Men, headed by Cyclops, set up their base at The Factory – a repurposed Sentinel factory in Merle, Alaska. Following the dissolution of the mutant island-nation Krakoa, the X-Men, including Beast, Psylocke, Kid Omega, Temper, Magik, Juggernaut, and the recently resurrected Magneto, have been occupied with a group known as 3K, who are creating new mutants by stimulating X-Genes in grown adults. In issue #5 of X-Men, it was revealed that Cassandra Nova — the telepathic twin of the imprisoned Charles Xavier — is the Zealot continuing the “Great Work” she initiated with a planned mutant extermination event in Grant Morrison’s New X-Men.

In issue #7 of X-Men, written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Netho Diaz, we learn about “The Iron Night,” an event that led to Cyclops taking charge of the new X-Men alongside Magneto. During this time, Beast was actively researching a cure for the affliction that confined Magneto to a wheelchair – an ailment later identified as R-LDS (Resurrection Linked Degenerative Sickness), a byproduct of the resurrection procedures carried out by the Five on Krakoa.

Following the close of the Krakoan Era and Professor X’s detainment for alleged crimes against humanity, Magneto sought out Cyclops at the Summers’ lodge located near Merle, Alaska. “I assumed you always had a strategy,” Magneto commented to his previous adversary, expressing his former ally’s thoughts. “All that I’ve striven for during the past couple of years? All I sacrificed and lost? It’s all for naught,” Cyclops replied. As Jean Grey was off in the comic series Phoenix, Cyclops chose to withdraw to his cabin, consuming numerous beers (which Magneto pointed out as “Logan-like behavior”).

In this scenario, Magneto addresses Xavier’s protege and fellow X-Men member, Cyclops, reminding him that during tough times, the people look towards him for leadership, as he was chosen and prepared for this role at a young age. Unlike Wolverine, who has infinite time due to his immortality, Cyclops doesn’t have the luxury of dwelling on feelings because he has a mission with a limited lifespan to achieve it. Magneto then challenges Cyclops by asking if he didn’t choose to become a “teenage warlord,” but instead was forced into this role, much like how Magneto himself was forced into hiding and persecution due to his Jewish heritage and mutant status. Essentially, Magneto is saying that the world doesn’t ask for our permission before inflicting suffering upon us; all we can do is respond by surviving or succumbing to it. Cyclops must decide what he will choose.

After Xavier and Krakoa departed, Magneto expressed that the X-Men were needed now more than ever. The Summers family’s cabin lies opposite a Sentinel factory, which once produced mutant-hunting robots until it was closed by the Avengers. When an active “zombie” Wild Sentinel sprung up and threatened Merle townsfolk, Cyclops and Magneto collaborated to destroy the rogue robot.

If you’re searching for a mutant like Magneto, here he is!

Initially, when Magneto unintentionally overpowered his magnetic control, Cyclops was compelled to strike him unconscious with a powerful beam of light. Over time, the Beast identified that Magneto’s condition was R-LDS, a malady which debilitates the body and results in resurrected mutants losing command of their abilities. Characters like Cyclops and Quentin Quire, an extraordinary telepath who met his end at Sabretooth’s hands (in Wolverine: Sabretooth War)), were affected too.
