Ariana Grande Explains Why She Changed Her Voice for Glinda in Wicked

As a fashion enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over glossy magazines and runway shows, I find Ariana Grande‘s transformation from a ponytail-wearing pop sensation to a red carpet diva truly captivating.

Ariana Grande knows the voice is hers.

In an effort to convincingly portray Glinda the Good Witch opposite Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba in the upcoming “Wicked” film adaptation, the singer of “The Boy is Mine” put forth considerable effort to delve into her character. A significant aspect of this process involved modifying the pitch of her voice.

Ariana shared in her interview with The New York Times on November 6th that it was crucial for her to minimize her presence as much as possible, allowing the focus to solely be on “Glinda.

Since filming wrapped up, that higher octave note sung by Glinda has remained with her. She’s promptly dismissed any negative comments regarding her current vocal style.

In her conversation with Vanity Fair last September, Ariana shared that there are places around the globe where people might not be aware of the efforts required to modify one’s voice, whether it’s singing, adopting a new accent for a role, or creating a character voice for a project.

In my line of work, I’ve noticed a pattern – when a male actor delivers a powerful performance, it often garners high acclaim. There are indeed jibes that follow, but they come after being showered with praise: “Wow, he was so immersed in the role.” It’s just part of the profession, truly.

As someone who met my partner, Ethan Slater, on the Wicked set, I won’t let the doubters bring me low. My voice, which I poured so much into for the role I’ve yearned for since my childhood, stands as a testament to that dedication.

Speaking as a lifestyle enthusiast, I can’t help but express immense pride in an accomplishment close to my heart – my performance in this role. The reason I chose to address the critics was not merely for debate, but because I’m deeply proud of the sheer dedication and effort I put into it. I gave it my all, pouring every ounce of myself, including my physical being, into this project. That sense of pride compels me to safeguard this achievement.

Moreover, Ariana’s voice in the movie isn’t the sole change she implemented.

In the movie, which features actors like Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and is set to hit theaters on November 22, Ariana Grande-Butera is given full credit. (In this version, I’ve tried to make it more conversational by using “In the movie” instead of “For the film” and “is set to hit theaters” instead of “lands in theaters”.)

Ariana expressed that the experience was incredibly comforting for her, similar to returning home. She felt as though she rediscovered herself in many aspects during her time with Glinda and Elphaba, characters she connected with deeply when she saw the show at age 10. This journey seemed like a beautiful tribute to that significant part of her past.
