EA Just Shut Down Three Popular Games Today

As a longtime Battlefield fan who’s spent countless hours immersed in the thrill of virtual combat across various platforms, it’s bittersweet to see EA pulling the plug on three iconic titles – Battlefield 3, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield Hardline. These games have been part of my gaming journey since their releases, each providing unique experiences that I cherished.

Electronic Arts (EA) has officially closed down access to three of their once widely-played games, making most parts of these titles unavailable for play. Each game primarily revolved around multiplayer experiences, so with their shutdown, only a small portion, such as the single-player elements, remain accessible. These single-player aspects are just minor components compared to the overall appeal and enjoyment that players derived from each game.

Among the three games here, Battlefield 3 is the eldest, having been initially launched in the year 2011 as a direct successor to Battlefield 2 from 2005. This masterpiece was created by DICE, and when it hit the market on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, it garnered an impressive Metacritic score of 89 upon release.

Among the games closing down today is Battlefield 4, a sequel developed by DICE that followed up on its 2013 release. This game was also playable on various platforms, including those it initially launched on, plus PS4 and Xbox One. On Metacritic, it garnered scores as high as 85.

2015 saw the launch of Battlefield Hardline, the third and final installment in this franchise that’s shutting down today. Just like its predecessor, Battlefield 4, it was available on multiple platforms. However, unlike Battlefield 4, which was developed by DICE, Hardline was crafted by Visceral Games. Despite a Metacritic score of 73, it wasn’t exactly the peak of the series. That title would go to the much-criticized Battlefield 2042, released later on.

Since the servers for these games and their downloadable content are being taken offline, it’s no longer possible to earn certain achievements and trophies. This means that achieving a 100% completion or the Platinum Trophy for each game is now impossible.

While it’s possible that these servers for the three Battlefield games could be restarted at some point, if they aren’t resurfaced through a remaster or remake, it seems they may be shut off permanently.

The shutdown of these servers is primarily due to financial considerations. It’s expensive to keep them running because they require maintenance. However, there aren’t enough players to cover this cost. Additionally, while the servers are operational, they pose a security risk. Unfortunately, the number of players doesn’t warrant taking on this risk either.
