As a movie buff with over three decades of Star Wars fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation at the news of Simon Kinberg helming a new trilogy. You see, I was there when the original trilogy ended, and then again when the prequels were released, followed by the sequel trilogy.
Recently, it was announced that Disney and Lucasfilm have struck a deal with Simon Kinberg, a veteran X-Men producer, to write and produce a brand-new set of three Star Wars movies. As reported initially, these upcoming films could potentially extend the Skywalker Saga, carrying on the story following the events depicted in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. However, other reports hint that this trilogy might introduce a fresh narrative within the Star Wars galaxy.
In essence, there’s a significant new venture unfolding in the Star Wars universe, and Kinberg is steering the ship. Despite some setbacks on his CV from his X-Men days, Kinberg is also the creative mind behind the TV series Star Wars Rebels, collaborating with Dave Filoni on its creation. With a whole trilogy to work with, one might wonder where Kinberg intends to guide the Star Wars universe next.
If these upcoming movies are extensions of the storyline initiated in the sequel trilogy, it’s probable that they’ll carry on with characters like Rey and Finn as they explore and uphold the teachings of the Force and Jedi ways. However, since Rey is also set to star in a standalone film, this current sequence seems somewhat contradictory.
It seems more probable that the upcoming Rey film by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will carry on the narrative left unfinished in The Rise of Skywalker. If this is indeed the case, and many of the reports released on Thursday prove accurate, Kinberg’s trilogy may introduce fresh territories within the Star Wars timeline at a later point.

It’s unfortunate, but it seems likely that the upcoming Star Wars trilogy will stick closely to the structure of “The Force Awakens.” This means a powerful new force of darkness will emerge in the galaxy, attempting to fill the void left by the Empire and the First Order. A fresh group of heroes will step up to challenge them, with at least one character struggling to master their mysterious connection to the Force. Additionally, familiar faces from past Star Wars stories will appear to tie the new films to our cherished memories of the saga.
Although it might seem a bit repetitive given our past experiences, this opportunity appears to be Lucasfilm’s chance to reignite the excitement from the beginning of the previous trilogy, all while learning from its earlier mistakes. The strategy here involves Kinberg writing the entire trilogy, which should result in a consistent narrative and voice, potentially smoothing out the jarring transitions that characterized the last three films.
In these upcoming films, we can expect to see familiar and cherished Star Wars characters make an appearance or be mentioned. The appeal of nostalgia was crucial for the success of “The Force Awakens”, and it’s likely that this sentiment will help draw in fans who may be divided about the new direction. However, the original trio consisting of Luke, Leia, and Han are no longer options. As for Din Djarin, aka The Mandalorian, he is unlikely to be included here. His storyline is currently the most engaging aspect of Star Wars, so it makes sense to keep his journey ongoing rather than revealing its conclusion prematurely.
Although this reasoning doesn’t hold true for Din Djarin’s charming sidekick, Grogu (also known as Baby Yoda), it’s indisputable that he’s the standout Star Wars character from the Disney era. Despite being around 50 years old in “The Mandalorian,” he remains a baby or toddler on screen. If you were to portray him in the future, well past the timeline of both his era and the sequel trilogy, you’d have a fully grown Jedi on your hands – one that fans adore and whose story could still feel innovative.
It’s quite likely that an older Grogu might play a significant role in the upcoming saga. This way, we can fully explore the Yoda character from his youth, making him central to the trilogy rather than just a wise old mentor with a limited time span. Unlike George Lucas, who was known for retiring characters, modern franchises like Lucasfilm seem eager to create an enduring character such as Grogu.
It’s best not to make Grogu the central figure in this upcoming series, ideally. Here’s hoping Lucasfilm and Kinberg steer clear of that. However, if he could serve as a connecting piece between different periods, that would be very much in line with Disney’s Star Wars style.
It’s worth considering linking some elements to at least one or two characters from the sequel trilogy in future stories. While Rey already has her own movie, there’s a possibility that an older version of her character could join the narrative at some stage. If this happens, both Finn and Poe should definitely be considered. Additionally, let’s not forget Jannah, introduced in “Rise of Skywalker” and revealed to be Lando’s daughter.
As this tale progresses further into the future, it’s quite possible that the offspring of these heroes could become the main figures in the storyline.
It’d be fantastic if Kinberg surprised us all by not doing any of these suggested things, instead starting something entirely fresh with characters unrelated to our current favorites and exploring a previously unexplored part of the Star Wars universe. However, given past trends, it seems highly unlikely that this will happen – in fact, it’s as if hope for such an outcome is speeding away at top speed.
