Warning: This story contains major spoilers for season four of Netflix’s Outer Banks.
The Pogues made the most of a heartbreaking moment.
Josh Pate and Shannon Burke, the duo behind the creation and co-writing of the season four finale of Outer Banks, shared that the show’s cast generally reacted favorably to their decision to write off popular character Jackson “JJ” Maybank in the final episode.
To begin with, it’s worth noting that the actor portraying JJ, namely Rudy Pankow, had already agreed to the concept of his character experiencing a sad demise even before the series began.
As I shared with TopMob News, I found myself brimming with enthusiasm at the prospect – the mere thought of portraying a death or dying scene was truly captivating to me, on an intellectual level.
In the process of planning for the crucial scene, Rudy benefited from ample advance notice, since the concept of eliminating a Pogue character early in the series creation was proposed by Josh, who then presented it to Rudy not long after.
Initially, a concept that was almost implied since the start of the show suggested that eventually one of the Pogues would pass away, as the screenwriter clarified. By the second season, we came to understand that it would be JJ who met this fate. In fact, discussions about his character’s demise were held with Rudy, and it was suggested that his death might take place in Kiara’s presence.
From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I’d say: In our Outer Banks production circle, stars such as Madison Bailey (Kiara “Kie” Carrera), Madelyn Cline (Sarah Cameron), Chase Stokes (John B Routledge), Drew Starkey (Rafe Cameron), Austin North (Topper Thornton), and Carlacia Grant (Cleo Anderson) were the ones I worked closely with. Interestingly, Jonas Pate—who co-created Outer Banks alongside Josh and Shannon, and directed the final episode of season four—revealed that we kept the surprising ending under wraps until it was set in stone.
Jonas explained to TopMob that they only discovered it quite late in the process, specifically not until they received the script for the final episode.
But once they were cued into the storyline, Rudy’s costars certainly had a mix of feelings.
Jonas pointed out, with a hint of humor, that the cast’s immediate reaction likely was something like, “I’m glad it’s not me,” due to their strong affection for Rudy. They are indeed close friends.
Without a doubt, ensuring the portrayal of his demise was fittingly dramatic was the principal concern for the actors. To quote Jonas, they all seemed to unite in their focus on the narrative itself.
He went on, expressing that everyone was determined to make it as impactful and moving as possible. They readily joined the endeavor.
In the end, the feelings that surrounded JJ’s last moments were far more intense than just emotional for Shannon.
He mentioned that he finds it difficult not to cry while watching it. The narrative reaches a deeply moving climax, and when the younger Rudy’s flashbacks appear, it becomes incredibly emotional on multiple levels.
Shannon expressed, “I wouldn’t call it my ‘preferred’ scene due to its emotional intensity – it feels like a stab to the heart – but it’s impactful and provides a gratifying resolution to the character’s storyline.
