A Mass Effect TV series is finally happening, so I hope it doesn't make this mistake

What you need to know

  • A Mass Effect TV series is in development at Amazon MGM Studios, according to a report from Variety.
  • This report comes three years after a Deadline report alleged Amazon was working on a deal with Electronic Arts for a Mass Effect series.
  • Michael Gamble, the director of the next Mass Effect game at BioWare, is reportedly attached to the series as an executive producer.
  • Amazon MGM Studios has worked with Bethesda and Kilter Films on the acclaimed Fallout TV series, and is currently working on a second season.

As a long-time fan of the Mass Effect series, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and trepidation at the news of a TV adaptation in the works. Having spent countless hours immersed in the rich universe that BioWare has created, I’ve grown attached to the characters, their stories, and the decisions I’ve made as Commander Shepard.

A report is bearing, fruit three years later.

Amazon Studios, in collaboration with Electronic Arts and BioWare, are working together on a television adaptation of the Mass Effect video game series. As reported by Variety on November 7 (N7 Day), this partnership is official. The creative director of the upcoming Mass Effect game, Michael Gamble, will serve as an executive producer for the TV series. This news follows almost three years after Deadline first hinted at Amazon being close to a deal for a Mass Effect TV series.

It’s said that the attached writer is Daniel Casey, known for his work on the Fast and Furious series and contributing to the script of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Additionally, Avi Arad and Karim Zreik, both with extensive experience in Marvel films and television productions, are rumored to serve as executive producers for the upcoming series.

Beyond this point, details about the plot or the way the series will emulate the games are scarce. The Mass Effect series is comprised of role-playing games, where players assume the role of Commander Shepard. Throughout the games, choices made by the player have significant consequences. On the other hand, Mass Effect: Andromeda presented a distinct narrative in the same galaxy. At present, BioWare is developing the fifth installment of Mass Effect, but specifics are yet to be revealed.

Amazon continues to invest in game adaptions for TV

Previously, Amazon collaborated with Bethesda Game Studios and Kilter Films for the Fallout television show, released early in 2024 to widespread praise and financial triumph. It garnered two Emmys and attracted more than 100 million viewers. Now, a second season is being developed.

Currently, Amazon is collaborating with PlayStation Productions and Sony Santa Monica for the development of a God of War television show. The executives overseeing this project are Cory Barlog and Yumi Yang from Sony Santa Monica.

I can’t help but wonder how the Mass Effect series will translate into a television show, given the emphasis on player choices having lasting consequences was a major factor in the games’ popularity among many people, including myself.

I’m hoping that the fifth game won’t set a fixed narrative path before it, ensuring our past actions don’t become irrelevant. It’s acceptable if the series eventually settles on a single timeline, but I’m optimistic that the fifth game could serve as a reboot, rather than a point where previous paths are terminated.

The Mass Effect Legendary Edition can be found on the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, personal computers running Windows, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4 at this time.
