As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and impatience upon hearing that Borderlands 4 might be gracing our screens as early as summer 2025. My first introduction to the Borderlands universe was back in 2009, and ever since then, it has been a staple in my gaming diet – much like how some people can’t live without their morning coffee.
2K Games has provided a slightly narrower estimated release timeline for Borderlands 4, which was previously scheduled to launch sometime in 2025. However, further details about the upcoming Borderlands game remain scarce, with only its development for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC being confirmed so far. The latest update from the project team hints that the wait may not be as long as anticipated.
2K Games’ parent company Take-Two Interactive has set a potential launch period for “Borderlands 4” within its upcoming fiscal year, which starts in April 2025. This means the earliest possible release month for “Borderlands 4” is April 2025, ruling out any releases from January to March of that year. Although many fans didn’t anticipate the next major “Borderlands” installment to come out so early, this announcement officially confirms that it won’t be happening before then.

In an interview with Variety, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick provided more insights about the potential release date for Borderlands 4. He mentioned that Grand Theft Auto VI is also planned for a fall release in 2025 by Take-Two. To avoid overlapping these two major titles, it’s likely that there will be a significant gap of several months between the launches of Borderlands 4 and Grand Theft Auto VI, giving each game sufficient space to gain popularity separately.
Zelnick implied that it’s unlikely for us or anyone else to release a major game like Borderlands 4 too close to Grand Theft Auto VI without good reason.
It’s plausible that Borderlands 4 might debut during the summer of 2025, while GTA VI is anticipated for the fall, possibly from September to November. If Borderlands 4 is ready ahead of time, Take-Two Interactive might choose to launch it earlier in 2025, followed by GTA VI as their main event closer to the end of the year. However, there’s also a possibility that Borderlands 4 could be held back for a later release, such as December, which would put some distance between it and GTA VI if it were to come out in September.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the mysteries surrounding Borderlands 4 yet to be unveiled. Details regarding its storyline and gameplay are being tightly guarded, with the initial trailer serving more as a tantalizing teaser than a revealing glimpse. If the stars align and Geoff Keighley gets another chance to showcase this anticipated title, like he did earlier this year, we might just catch a sneak peek at The Game Awards in December.
