As a die-hard fan who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and following every cinematic Marvel adaptation, I must say that the latest revelation about the failed attempt to bring Nicolas Cage back as Ghost Rider for Deadpool & Wolverine is a bitter pill to swallow.
As a die-hard fan, I was thrilled when Deadpool & Wolverine brought back some beloved characters and hinted at more returns. In an intriguing podcast chat, director Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman shared their ambition to bring Nicolas Cage back for another stint as Ghost Rider. Unfortunately, it seemed that convincing him proved elusive.
As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but share my excitement when concept artist Rodney Fuentebella unveiled early sketches for Deadpool and Wolverine featuring Ghost Rider and Ben Affleck as Daredevil. During the Awardist podcast, Ryan Reynolds confirmed these characters were initially part of the script: “They were in the early drafts. We had scenes for that sequence, but as things evolved, you’re often looking… We aim to make the movie responsibly, given its massive budget. It’s the priciest Deadpool film yet, and we want to maintain a sense of restraint to foster asymmetrical thinking and creativity. Too much time or money can sometimes stifle such imagination, so yes, we had to trim things down.
“But we did talk to Nic Cage,” he went on. “We tried to get him, but he was a no-go… I would’ve loved him.” In the end, the movie did feature Chris Evans reprising his role as the Human Torch, Jennifer Garner as Elektra and Wesley Snipes as Blade, while Channing Tatum took on his long-rumored role as Gambit. Levy said he was grateful they got as many stars as they did.
I’m fortunate that I received a lot of affirmatives,” I mentioned. “That’s mainly due to Ryan, who wouldn’t hesitate to reach out personally. He’d frequently surprise-call via FaceTime, catching them off guard.
It’s possible that Cage felt apprehensive following his recent superhero guest spot in The Flash. Much like Tatum, he was stepping into a role that had been speculated about for some time but never taken on before. Given the build-up, his portrayal turned out to be a relatively short one, heavily reliant on CGI, appearing during the movie’s final moments in another dimension. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment last year, Cage discussed this experience.
Speaking about Andy Muschietti, the director of “The Flash” films, he’s an outstanding talent and a fantastic individual. I adored his work on both “It” movies. Originally, my role was to stand in another realm, essentially observing the annihilation of the universe. Superman, or Kal-El, was witnessing the end of a cosmos, so you can imagine the intensity in those few hours I had on set. Without any dialogue, I had to express the emotion through my eyes alone. That’s what I did, and I was there for approximately three hours.
Although Ghost Rider might not have appeared alongside Deadpool and Wolverine in their recent adventure, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga continues, offering potential future opportunities for one final hurrah as Ghost Rider. You can catch Deadpool and Wolverine now on digital platforms, DVD, or Blu-ray, and they will be available on Disney+ starting Tuesday, November 12th.
