As a devoted admirer of the enchanting world of radio dramas, I find myself deeply moved by the news of June Spencer’s passing at the remarkable age of 105. Her illustrious career and indelible impact on British entertainment are nothing short of inspiring.
As a film enthusiast, I’m saddened to share the news that June Spencer, a remarkable actress who brought Peggy Woolley to life in the beloved radio drama series, The Archers on BBC Radio 4, has passed away at the impressive age of 105.
It was announced on Friday, 8th November 2024, that Spencer had passed away serenely during the night, as confirmed by her family in a statement they issued.
“They want to express special appreciation and gratitude towards the staff at Liberham Lodge, as they provided such tender care during the past two years.
Spencer made his debut as Peggy in the initial episode of The Archers, which was produced in 1950 and broadcast for the first time in 1951. He was born in Nottingham in 1919.
In 1953, she temporarily stepped away from the show to attend to her family matters. During this time, Thelma Rogers stepped into the role of Peggy.
In the grand tapestry of my film criticism journey, I found myself revisiting a familiar role in the late ’50s and early ’60s, that of Rita Flynn. This was a brief interlude before Rogers departed from The Archers, after which I once more stepped into the shoes of Peggy – a character I had previously portrayed with much enthusiasm and dedication.
She then remained with the drama until 2022, when she retired at the age of 103.
Back in 1950, I played a part in sowing an acorn. Miraculously, it sprouted, and by January 1951, it had been transplanted and named “The Archers.
Over time, it grew into a magnificent tree with numerous branches. However, one of the older branches, called Peggy, has started to weaken and pose a safety risk. Consequently, I realized it was necessary for her to be removed, hence I’ve pruned her carefully.
2021 saw Spencer participating in the 70th anniversary festivities of The Archers, held at Clarence House and graciously hosted by Camilla, who was then the Duchess of Cornwall before her coronation as Queen.
Camilla referred to Peggy as “an authentic national treasure whose presence has been a significant part of my life, as well as that of countless others, for a lengthy period I’ve known.
Beyond my admiration for her work on The Archers, I’ve also had the pleasure of spotting Spencer gracing the screens on other shows like the daytime drama Doctors and the revered religious program Songs of Praise.
In 1991 and 2017, respectively, she was bestowed with an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), in recognition of her contributions to drama, charity, and in June 2010, she was honored with the Freedom of the City of London.
Among those expressing their condolences upon hearing the news of June Spencer’s death was comedian Angela Barnes, who posted on Twitter, now known as X: “There are good lives, and then there are exceptional ones. Rest in Peace, June Spencer. Peggy Woolley may have been annoying at times, but you truly excelled in portraying her. Farewell.
