As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Techland’s decision to focus on narrative and survival in “Dying Light: The Beast” is a breath of fresh air in today’s gaming landscape. Having spent countless hours battling hordes of the undead in the original game, I’m thrilled to see how the studio has evolved and refined its zombie-slaying formula.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited to share that it appears Techland isn’t wrapping up their post-launch plans for “Dying Light 2 Stay Human” just yet. Up next in the zombie-slaying series is something truly intriguing – “Dying Light: The Beast”, a new standalone adventure featuring our beloved protagonist, Kyle Crane, from the original game. Originally conceived as DLC for “Dying Light 2”, it’s evolved into its own unique standalone project. Can’t wait to dive in!
Inquiry about the rationale behind that particular choice: What led to that decision being made?
Initially, we intended “Dying Light: The Beast” to be the second DLC for “Dying Light 2 Stay Human,” but an unexpected significant narrative leak in late 2023 forced us to reconsider. To prevent ruining the storyline for our passionate followers, we made a strategic decision and altered our approach instead.
Why did they ultimately decide to release Dying Light: The Beast as a separate game instead of continuing its development as a DLC for Dying Light 2, given that it initially started as an expansion for the latter?
Initially, we intended for “Dying Light: The Beast” to be the second downloadable content for “Dying Light 2 Stay Human” in late 2023. However, an unexpected significant narrative leak occurred during the second half of that year, forcing us to reconsider our plans. To prevent spoiling the storyline for our dedicated fanbase, we opted to make some changes and explore a new direction. During brainstorming sessions about what could set this project apart, we hit upon the idea of reintroducing Kyle Crane. This idea ignited a wave of creativity within the team, leading us to realize that it could be more than just a DLC. This moment served as a turning point for us – we decided to approach the project with fresh eyes, make more extensive changes than anticipated, and start developing “Dying Light: The Beast” as a full standalone game complete with new mechanics, an engaging storyline, and a whole new world for players to delve into.
Fans of Dying Light have eagerly anticipated the return of Kyle Crane for quite a while. Can you explain the reasoning behind his comeback at this particular moment, and walk us through the creative process of determining where to steer his narrative and how to reacquaint him with the world in Dying Light?
Kyle’s reappearance was a logical outcome as we pondered strategies for addressing the issue of the leak incident we encountered. Crane, a beloved figure among the Dying Light community, seemed like the perfect choice to reintroduce after such a long absence, offering us an ideal platform to address unanswered questions from the initial game.
Absolutely! As Kyle Crane in Dying Light: The Beast, you’ll not only traverse the open world but also wield the exceptional abilities he’s gained. Could you elaborate on these newfound powers and how they’ll influence gameplay, particularly in relation to combat?
Indeed, Kyle’s latest abilities are the product of experiments performed on him during his imprisonment. These bestial capabilities enhance his strength, speed, and offer innovative methods for subduing adversaries, resulting in a combative experience that feels raw and exhilarating. However, it’s important to note that these powers aren’t readily available at all times. Instead, you must tactically deploy them during crucial situations rather than relying on them persistently.
In ‘Dying Light: The Beast’, our goal was to provide a heartfelt, impactful story centered around Kyle Crane’s journey. By choosing a linear narrative, we could craft significant, story-driven scenes that might not hold the same emotional weight in a more branching structure.
As a die-hard fan, I’ve noticed that Dying Light: The Beast will deviate from the RPG elements and the choice and consequence mechanics compared to Dying Light 2. Could you elaborate on the reasons behind this decision for this specific game, and more importantly, should fans anticipate this change as a potential direction for the series going forward?
In creating “Dying Light: The Beast”, our goal was to provide a poignant, character-driven narrative that would deeply explore Kyle Crane’s journey. By opting for a linear storyline, we could generate intense, plot-centric moments that might not hold the same weight in a more branching structure. This method also enables us to connect the lore of both “Dying Light” and “Dying Light 2 Stay Human”, offering long-awaited answers to players and establishing the canonical timeline. For this particular title, we believed a linear approach was most fitting for the story we wished to convey.
As an enthusiastic admirer, let me share some exciting insights about the fresh ambiance of Castor Woods. For players diving into this captivating world, they can anticipate a sprawling landscape that’s rich with variety. The environment is teeming with lush greenery, towering trees, and hidden nooks waiting to be explored. From vast open plains to dense forests, this setting promises an engaging journey through diverse terrains that will keep even the most seasoned adventurers on their toes!
Castor Woods presents a captivating, moody ambiance, encompassing a secluded, woodland valley that’s sparsely diverse, boasting landscapes ranging from pristine national parks to bustling industrial zones. It’s not as expansive as the map in Dying Light 2 Stay Human, but it’s richly detailed, meticulously designed to make exploration engaging at every step. The narrative unfolds predominantly through environmental storytelling, with hidden stories, concealed pathways, and lore intricately woven into the terrain. Each section of the map is painstakingly crafted by our artists. There are countless mysteries buried within this world, some dating back decades, and we eagerly anticipate players getting engrossed in this haunting, desolate landscape and enjoying the thrill of discovery.
Regarding the design, Castor Woods appears to offer a more rural atmosphere compared to what gamers may expect from typical Dying Light games. So, one might wonder how this change could affect the gameplay, particularly when it comes to parkour and movement.
Incorporating Parkour is crucial to the Dying Light series, so we made sure it remained a key feature even with the change in setting. Our aim was to make every structure significant, ensuring that there are fewer buildings but each one presents a challenge for climbing and running through. Essentially, you can’t just walk through the main door of any building; you need to use the protagonist’s agility to navigate. Additionally, we’re introducing the option to drive vehicles, which helps traverse between areas densely packed with parkour obstacles and opportunities. However, whether you travel by foot or car, the dynamic movement our fans appreciate remains, just adapted for this distinct environment.
“Dying Light: The Beast leans heavily into survival horror.”
In what manner will the horror element, which has been a significant aspect of Dying Light, be emphasized in The Beast?
In “Dying Light: The Beast,” the horror aspect is intensified, especially during nighttime when fear and peril escalate significantly. We dedicated considerable effort in refining and enhancing the behavior of our top predators, the Volatiles, to make them more terrifying and menacing. During daytime segments, we aimed to recreate the apprehension (and dread!) of the initial hours in the original “Dying Light,” where survival is precarious, and every interaction, even with ordinary foes, could be your last. With zombies becoming increasingly aggressive, coupled with an intense atmosphere, captivating visuals – players will need to exercise extreme caution, resourcefulness, and strategy to stay alive.
Could you explain for us how the gameplay changes and evolves when playing cooperatively compared to a single-player scenario?
In our effort to preserve the intense survival atmosphere of “Dying Light: The Beast” within the cooperative mode, we’re finding ways to maintain that tension despite having up to 4 players. While camaraderie can make managing hordes of zombies more manageable, it also increases complexity. To ensure the challenge remains, we adjust the enemy difficulty based on the number of players. There are hidden mechanisms in place that nudge the group to stick together, as splitting up during co-op sessions, though occasionally necessary, can pose risks.
In the game Dying Light, how long does ‘The Beast’ last? This length seems to be over 18 hours, but is this total time inclusive of extra content, or just for the primary storyline alone?
The 18-hour estimate refers to the primary gameplay, which includes the main storyline, side quests, and additional content. Since open-world games like Castor Woods offer a variety of optional activities, secrets, and custom experiences based on individual player preferences and styles, it’s challenging to determine the exact length. Enjoy your exploration!
Are there any plans to make the game PS5 Pro enhanced?
In our plans for “Dying Light: The Beast”, we’re keen on leveraging the top-tier capabilities of the PS5 Pro. We aim to maximize its potential, although we’ll reveal details about the exact improvements nearer to the game’s release. While we began with some enhancements in “Dying Light 2 Stay Human”, for “Dying Light: The Beast” our goal is to push those advancements significantly beyond what we’ve achieved so far.
We’re aiming to utilize all the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro for Dying Light: The Beast. However, we’ll disclose details regarding the exact improvements as we approach the release date.
As a developer, I’d be happy to share my views on the potential PS5 Pro. From a development perspective, how does an upgrade in the GPU affect the creation of my game when compared to the standard PS5?
We’re merely scratching the surface of what PS5 Pro can do, and it’s already proving to be an exhilarating journey! The increased power under its hood offers us greater freedom in terms of graphics and performance. The enhanced GPU specifically enables us to enhance visual realism, particularly when dealing with intricate environmental aspects such as weather effects, which are crucial for the immersive experience in games like Dying Light: The Beast. Moreover, this extra power generally translates to smoother gameplay at higher resolutions, a feature that’s vital for games like ours, where maintaining the highest level of immersion is paramount.
What are your thoughts on PSSR? What kind of opportunities will this open for the game?
Sony’s Progressive Scene Scaling Rate (PSSR) is significantly advancing the field of supersampling technology, which various other companies are also exploring. This move is commendable because it could enable developers to concentrate less on performance and instead have more room for creative freedom. If PSSR becomes a standard in the industry, it could prove to be more significant than just the console’s direct increase in GPU power, potentially making it a crucial aspect in gaming development.
Which screen resolution and frame rate does the game aim for on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and the projected PlayStation 5 Pro version?
At present, it’s not possible to disclose those specifics since the last round of adjustments typically takes place just prior to the rollout. However, keep an eye on our updates because we’ll share more details as we approach the product launch.
