Cult-Classic Santa Slasher Getting (Another) Reboot From Terrifier Team

As a longtime horror enthusiast who vividly remembers the chilling impact of both ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ and ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’, I am beyond thrilled to hear that the iconic slasher is getting a fresh reimagining! Growing up, those terrifying Santa Claus posters at video stores were as much a part of my childhood as candy canes and stockings by the fire. The thought of being involved in this legacy is nothing short of mind-blowing!

1984 saw the release of two horror films that left lasting impacts: Wes Craven’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” introduced the terrifying figure of Freddy Krueger, continuing to haunt viewers even today; at the same time, “Silent Night, Deadly Night” unveiled a deranged killer in a Santa Claus suit. More recently, in 2012, another movie titled “Silent Night” offered a fresh take on this concept. Now, in the latest development, the horror film “Silent Night” is being reimagined once again by Mike P. Nelson, who was responsible for the 2021 reboot of “Wrong Turn.” Cineverse distributors have secured the rights for this new version.

Nelson expressed his excitement in a statement, saying it’s an honor to collaborate with the team behind the original “Silent Night, Deadly Night” and for Terrifier 3. He recalled the thrill of seeing the movie poster at a video store as a five-year-old, sparking his imagination about terrifying events. Being involved in the film’s history years later seems unreal to him! He’s eager to start production and bring a fresh perspective to this captivating tale. Billy is making a comeback!

The Executive Director of Cineverse, in charge of acquisitions, Brandon Hill, expressed, “I’ve been an avid lover of the movie ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night,’ and I’m eager to share Mike’s creative vision with fellow enthusiasts of classic slasher films. This year has shown a surge in interest for independent horror productions that pack a punch, and we anticipate this project will draw a substantial audience, ranging from theaters to home entertainment and streaming platforms.

The original movie focused on a young boy who witnessed his parents brutally attacked by a man in a Santa suit, and when he grew up, witnessed another violent incident while he himself was dressed as Santa, igniting his violence and punishing those he deemed “naughty.” The film inspired four sequels, though the first sequel featured more than 30 minutes of recycled footage from the first entry and ultimately had a run time that only barely earned it a “feature film” distinction.

In contrast to A Nightmare on Elm Street , which holds a more influential position within the horror genre, both films, namely Silent Night, Deadly Night and Craven’s movie, were screened in cinemas during November of 1984. Initially, it appeared that Silent Night, Deadly Night was outperforming Craven’s film at the box office. However, due to its promotional campaign emphasizing Santa Claus on a violent rampage, the movie faced public criticism and was subsequently withdrawn from theaters.

The new Silent Night, Deadly Night is expected to land in theaters in 2025.
